NBA Trade Deadline: Power Ranking the 10 Biggest Deals That Got Done
The 2010-2011 NBA Trade Deadline is finally approaching a near end (February 24, 2011). It seems that many teams have waited until the very last moment to push for interesting and surprising deals, but as we know, it's sometimes better late than never.
With Carmelo Anthony going to New York and just recently Mo Williams to the Clippers, this has to have been one of the more exciting two weeks of chaos the NBA has seen in years.
Having said that, in this slideshow I will be power ranking the X biggest deals that got done before the trade deadline from ascending order. Hope you enjoy and as always, feel free to comment after the read!
10. Warriors and Nets
1 of 10
The Nets and Warriors just agreed to a three-player deal involving Troy Murphy (F), Brandan Wright (F), and Dan Gadzuric (C).
This deal consists of the Nets sending Murphy and a 2012 second-round Draft pick to the Warriors in exchange for Wright and Gadzuric.
Nothing exciting right? Well, yeah, but the point of this deal wasn't to attract attention, it was for the Nets to clear up some cap space in order to attract potential big name players in the future, possibly Dwight Howard? For now, smart move by the Nets.
9. Rockets and Grizzlies
2 of 10
Shane Battier is headed to Memphis and though this deal doesn't seem significant compared with what's already happened around the league, the Grizzlies have to be happy.
This deal consisted of the Rockets sending Shane Battier (F) and Ish Smith (G) to the Grizzlies in exchange for Hasheem Thabeet (C) and a first-round Draft pick.
Whether or not you want to believe this makes any impact, this is a great deal for the Grizzlies in Shane Battier. With all of the young talent in Memphis and now a veteran defensive specialist in Battier, the Grizzlies could possibly become a viable playoff team.
8. Wizards and Hawks
3 of 10
Just recently, the Hawks and the Wizards agreed to a four player trade: involving Kirk Hinrich (PG), Hilton Armstrong (C/F), Jordan Crawford (G), Mike Bibby (PG), and Maurice Evans (G/F).
The trade consists of the Hawks sending Bibby, Evans, Crawford and their 2011 first-round Draft pick in exchange for the Wizards' Hinrich and Armstrong.
Now looking at this deal without any bias or weird point of view, I'd bet that most people scratched their heads when looking at this very deal. Bibby has been the Hawks point guard for years now and their solution for solving the guard troubles is getting Hinrich, who has been struggling even in a Wizards uniform?
Honestly this doesn't quite make too much sense under the current circumstances, but we will see how this turns out for both teams. As for now, the deal seems to have gone in favor of the Wizards; with Bibby still able to play as a solid back-up point guard and Evans being able to possibly start at the shooting guard position, in the short-run, this deal benefited the struggling Washington Wizards.
7. Rockets and Suns
4 of 10
Aaron Brooks is now officially an Phoenix Sun and is by default the heir to Steve Nash for the starting point guard position.
This deal consists of the Rockets sending Aaron Brooks (G) to the Suns for Goran Dragic (G) and a first-round Draft pick. What does this mean for both sides? Well this results in a happy Aaron Brooks and a pleased Phoenix Suns' organization. For the Rockets, this means re-building time; Dragic is a solid point guard and who knows what's in store for the Rockets?
6. Hornets and Kings
5 of 10
With all that has happened in the last month or so, the Hornets-King deal has to be one of the more overlooked.
This deal consists of the Kings sending Carl Landry (F) to the Hornets in exchange for Marcus Thornton (G) and cash considerations.
Both teams win in this deal; the Kings get a solid shooting guard in Thornton and they save some money in the process. Because the Kings aren't going to contend anytime soon, maybe this is a sign for the Kings to start re-building and this is great first step.
5. Clippers and Cavaliers
6 of 10
It hasn't even been a week since we all saw Baron Davis lobbing what ended up being the dunk that won the 2011 NBA Dunk Contest. Wait, did I mention he was in a Clippers uniform?
Well it doesn't matter anymore because Davis is heading to one of the worst teams in NBA history, yes, Davis is headed to the Cleveland Cavaliers, but for who?
One of the more interesting deals that went down in recent news is the deal between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Los Angeles Clippers. It involves veteran guard, Baron Davis (G), Mo Williams (G), and Jamario Moon (F).
The deal consists of the Clippers sending Davis and their 2011 first-round Draft pick for Jamario Moon and Mo Williams from the Cavaliers.
For the Cavaliers this is a sign of desperation, possibly attempting to completely re-build their team, but for the Clippers, this may be the difference between being a mediocre team and possibly being contenders in the near future. Kudos to the Clippers GM for making this move.
4. Nets and Jazz
7 of 10
Is there something in my ear? Or did I hear that Deron Williams is headed to the New Jersey Nets? Nope, this is all true and with all of the unexpected events that have occured in this short amount of time, Williams is among the most crucial moves that has been made.
The trade consists of the Utah Jazz sending superstar, Deron Williams (G) in exchange for Derrick Favors (F), Devin Harris (G), Utah's 2011 first-round Draft pick, Utah's 2012 first-round Draft pick, and cash considerations.
This will impact both teams for the better, but it is looking to be more of a positive for the Jazz, considering they get both Harris and Favors, who are very solid players, if not over average. The Nets do also improve with Williams, who is still arguably the best point guard in the league today.
With all that has happened with the Jazz, losing Coach Sloan and now Willams it might be a sign of a new era of Jazz' basketball, which could turn out to be interesting.
3. Blazers and Bobcats
8 of 10
Gerald Wallace is headed to the city of roses and this only means improvement for the Blazers. For the Bobcats, I guess this means that they are giving up for the season, which may or may not be a good decision.
This deal consists of the Bobcats sending star forward, Gerald Wallace (F) in exchange for Dante Cunningham (F), Joel Przybilla (C), and two future first-round picks.
In a sense both teams benefit under the circumstances, but the obvious winner of this deal as of now are the Blazers. They now have another versatile star in Wallace and with Roy now coming back, the West might have to watch out for the new-look Blazers.
2. Celtics and Thunder
9 of 10
This deal doesn't make sense, it still doesn't make sense, and it will possibly never make sense, but Celtics' big man, Kendrick Perkins is headed to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
What doesn't make sense about this deal is the fact that the Celtics are trading away what is one of their most essential pieces in a championship caliber puzzle. Oh, did I mention that they are sending Nate Robinson packing too?
But here is the deal: It consists of the Celtics sending Perkins (C) and Nate Robinson (G) to the Thunder in exchange for Jeff Green (F) and Nenad Kristic (C).
Whatever the reasoning was, Celtics' fans better be ready for a long and dark road, because there isn't any light at the end of the tunnel that is in sight, at least as of now.
For all you Lakers' fans and all of you Bosh' fans, be grateful that the Celtics' GM wrapped Kendrick Perkins in a bow and gave the Thunder his keys to his championship secrets. Gasol and Bosh, how does it feel to now have to potentially deal with Perkins in the playoffs anymore?
1. Knicks and Nuggets
10 of 10
Now is the prime time to become a "Knicks' fan." I put quotations in to emphasize the fact that thousands of fans will and already have jumped on the Knicks' bandwagon fan base. Melo is now a Knick and there is already a 55% increase in ticket sales, what's next, Melo's jersey being sold as the number jersey in the U.S.?
Well if you haven't heard, the Knicks have acquired superstar, Carmelo Anthony (F), veteran guard, Chauncey Billups (G), Renaldo Blackman (F), Anthony Carter (G), and Sheldon Williams (C) in exchange for Wilson Chandler (F), Raymond Felton (G), Danilo Gallinari (F), Kosta Koufos (C), Timofey Mozgov (C), 2014 first-round Draft pick, and 2012 and 2013 second-round picks which was originally owned by the Warriors.
Let's take a breather here and reflect on what has just happened. In the overall sense, both the Knicks and Nuggets have potentially benefited from this deal. The Nuggets don't need to necessarily re-build with these group of new guys and the Knicks are now potential contenders in the East.
In what has been a crazy havoc of trade deadline events, this has been the most significant. Hopefully all of these adjustments by these teams results in a more exciting NBA and what more could we ask for? The question is, who were the winners and who were the losers? Well the answers lie among you viewers and in the future of these new-look organizations.
