Reports: Atlanta Trades Mike Bibby, Others To Washington For Hinrich

Tyler WardFeb 23, 2011

Sources have reported that the Washington Wizards have shipped point guard Kirk Hinrich to the Atlanta Hawks in a multi-player deal.

According to the report, Atlanta would send point guard Mike Bibby, guard Maurice Evans, rookie guard Jordan Crawford, and a first-round draft pick to the Wizards for Hinrich and forward/center Hilton Armstrong.

This deal puzzles me.

With Bibby now gone, Hinrich would take the reins as the starting point guard in Atlanta.

Hinrich is a good player, but he is not a starter. This doesn't really benefit the Hawks at all.

Bibby wasn't the best player in the world, but he was a player that had constructed a lot of chemistry with the team. He was the offensive leader of the Hawks and now that he's gone, it disrupts the team in more ways than one.

Hinrich, in my opinion, is a poor man's Bibby. What does that do for the Hawks? Absolutely nothing.

Hinrich does not have the capabilities to lead the Hawks, especially to the playoffs.

If the Hawks make the postseason, which is pretty much one-hundred percent, Hinrich will be one of the worst point guards out of the starting eight players.

Of the eight teams currently in the Eastern Conference playoffs, most, if not all, of the starting point guards are better than Hinrich. Rajon Rondo. Derrick Rose. Jameer Nelson. Chauncey Billups. Darren Collison. Even Jrue Holiday. I think all these players are better.

A point guard leads the team. Hinrich isn't even one of the best players on the team. At least Bibby was, albeit him getting older. Bibby actually had leadership qualities that Hinrich doesn't possess.

I just don't get this trade at all.

And to top it all off, the Hawks give up a first round pick? Are you kidding me? That is utterly ridiculous. Hinrich isn't worth a first-round pick, especially when you're giving up Bibby and two other players.

Amazing.

The Hawks front office made a horrible trade.

And I still don't understand why the Hawks would want to be so thin at the guard position.

Trading Bibby, Evans and Jordan Crawford would mean that the only guards on the team would be Hinrich, Jeff Teague and Jamal Crawford. That really doesn't make any sense for the Hawks to make a deal of that magnitude.

Not to mention, the main headline is that Atlanta would ship out three guards, but only receive one in return. The Hawks are in dire need of a backup center, so I can see where that suits them.

With Armstrong arriving in Atlanta, does that mean center Zaza Pachulia is gone? Only time will tell.

Over his career, Armstrong has just seemed to be a big body in the paint that takes up space. A former first-round pick, he has not lived up to the hype that surrounded him coming out of college.

However, I would rather have him than Pachulia. So, that i one, if not the only, benefit of this trade for the Hawks.

If the front office is smart, they would have to have another deal in the works.

They are not going to go deep into the playoffs with just three guards. They need depth in order to succeed and with those players, it isn't going to happen.

There is still plenty of time, however, and we will see what happens in the next few hours.

Trade Overview:

Atlanta receives: PG Kirk Hinrich, F/C Hilton Armstrong

Washington receives: PG Mike Bibby, G Jordan Crawford, G Maurice Evans, 1st round pick
