Matt Dickey Shot Video: UNC Asheville Upsets Coastal Carolina With Buzzer-Beater

Less than two months into 2011, we’ve already received an ESPN ESPY Play of the Year Award nominee.

If you haven’t seen it, maybe your TV and internet has been out of whack. This sensational play has been all over ESPN and the hottest internet sites around.

It doesn’t get much better for Matt Dickey, who won’t have to step on the court again. He’s officially a UNC Asheville folk hero.

This is the type of play that once again reiterates why myself and millions upon millions of people across the world absolutely adore sports in general.

As soon as the camera begins to follow the Coastal Carolina inbound pass with 2.8 seconds left of a tied 58-58 game, you just knew something was up—you just couldn’t tell where any of the players were on the court.

Matt Dickey resembled a football safety on this pass, intercepting the ball in stride as it was heading towards the floor.

That was a fantastic play in itself as Dickey, knowing Coastal Carolina had to get the ball past half court to attempt a game-winning shot, was in prime position to intercept the ball.

Dickey puts the ball on the floor one time before leaping in the air, evading the Coastal Carolina defender. As Dickey hangs in the air, he maneuvers the ball perfectly to avoid the Coastal Carolina defender’s hand and just flat out drains the game-winning three-pointer.

You would have thought Dickey practiced this type of play because the shot was dead-on perfect. It was a storybook ending for Dickey and UNC Asheville. The buzzer sounds just as Dickey sinks the shot.  Nothing but net.  The players congregate in excitement; the Coastal Carolina fans are stunned.

A magical moment for Matt Dickey and UNC Asheville. A picture perfect buzzer-beater for you. Appreciate the greatness now because you’ll soon forget it.
