Carmelo Anthony Trade Rumors: How the Deals Could Affect Several Teams
It may be All-Star Weekend, but Carmelo Anthony rumors continue to dominate NBA news, with the New Jersey Nets and New York Knicks reportedly at the forefront of trade talks for the Denver Nuggets star.
As it stands now, the Nets have reportedly offered top pick Derrick Favors, point guard Devin Harris and four first-round picks.
The Knicks have reportedly offered three of their top six players—Raymond Felton, Danilo Galinari and Wilson Chandler—plus a pick that would be acquired for dealing forward Anthony Randolph.
Anthony would bring point guard Chauncey Billups along with him if a trade went through.
Of course, the star forward could still remain in Denver after all is said and done.
Here is my take on how the proposed deals would affect each team.
10. Knicks' Revenue Would Go Up
1 of 10
The Knicks were already valued as the No. 1 NBA franchise in terms of annual revenue this season by Forbes.
After star Amar'e Stoudemire came to town in the offseason, their annual revenue shot up six percent (they were already the No. 1 valued franchise before this in 2009).
If Carmelo Anthony arrived in New York, that value would boom even more.
9. Nuggets Revenue Would Shrink
2 of 10
If Carmelo Anthony left Denver, the Nuggets' fan interest would probably slide, which would lead to decreased revenue.
But based on my projection for them in a few years after the trade (more on this later), it could prove to be a huge move both on the court and in terms of revenue.
8. Nets Wouldn't Get Much Better Right Away
3 of 10
The New Jersey Nets are a troubled team on the floor.
One star isn't going to dramatically change that.
The Nets would be giving up future first-round picks, their top pick in Derrick Favors and lead point guard Devin Harris for Anthony.
Bringing 'Melo to Jersey would bring a centerpiece to begin a rise, but given how much they'd give up to get him, it would hurt them for probably at least a couple years with what they would have at the moment.
7. Nets Revenue Would Go Up
4 of 10
Even if it took the Nets a couple years to rise as a top team, the revenue a superstar such as Carmelo Anthony would bring would be colossal in a star-deprived city.
It would be the spike the organization would need before contending as a legitimate title contender.
6. Nets Wouldn't Become Powerhouse for At Least a Couple Years
5 of 10
The New Jersey Nets, as mentioned before, wouldn't be a contender for a while given that they would give up so much to get Carmelo Anthony.
But the dividends could be huge, if the Nets piece together the right players to play with Anthony and Chauncey Billups.
Nets fans would gladly give up a couple of down years for a run at the title.
5. Nuggets Could Kiss Their Title Hopes Goodbye
6 of 10
You may think I'm referring to if Carmelo Anthony leaves Denver, but I'm actually saying the opposite.
If 'Melo stays in Denver, the Nuggets would probably never make a title run.
Nothing against Anthony as a player, but obviously the Nuggets have never been able to get there despite having talent throughout the years; for whatever reason, it's just not in the cards with Anthony at the helm, something the Nuggets organization should have realized before Anthony enacted a possible departure out of Denver himself.
If the Nuggets trade Anthony, however, they would set themselves up better for a title, especially if they traded to the Nets.
Again, the Nets are giving up young talent in Favors and Harris, and the numerous draft picks could help begin a large-scale rebuilding of the Nuggets that could prove to get them over that elusive hump to the NBA Finals.
4. Knicks Would Become a Powerhouse Until Chauncey Billups Leaves
7 of 10
We've seen numerous instances in NBA history where stars find themselves the center of a team without a solid point guard, only to never get to the promised land.
Point guard Chauncey Billups, who would come to New York with Anthony in a trade with the Knicks, would prove to be suitable for the time-being, but he's certainly not getting any younger.
The Knicks would find themselves possibly without a star point guard after Billups retired.
But, hey, being a powerhouse for a couple years isn't bad, either.
3. Nuggets Could Become Better As a Team
8 of 10
As mentioned before, trading Carmelo Anthony doesn't seem very agreeable at first in Denver, but when you think of what the Nuggets could possible coerce out of the Knicks or Nets, those are some serious pieces to begin a new run at the title with.
None of these pieces at first would help the Nuggets get there, but if the Nuggets traded with the Nets and received those draft picks, who knows who they could select in the upcoming drafts?
2. It Could Prove Devastating for the Nets
9 of 10
If you think about it, if the Nets really did give up all that has been reported for Carmelo Anthony, imagine how long it would take for them to build the team around Anthony.
They already have many positions to fill without giving anything up; if they acquired Anthony it could actually hurt them for years. Not to mention, they could become "just another playoff team" like the Nuggets, anyway.
Unless, of course, Anthony finds a way to get his buddies to join him for a championship run.
For example, like what happened after LeBron James' "Decision."
1. The Knicks Would Become the Next Powerhouse
10 of 10
If Carmelo Anthony makes it to New York, he brings along with him fellow distributor Chauncey Billups.
On top of this, the Knicks would still have one Amar'e Stoudemire, not to mention newcomer Landry Fields.
That's an impressive team, even without Raymond Felton, Danilo Galinari, and Wilson Chandler.
If the Knicks could find a serviceable center, as well as find a replacement for Billups once he retires, you could be looking at the next powerhouse of the NBA.
