The 10 Worst Teams to Play For in Professional Sports

Brett AppleyJun 7, 2018

The Cleveland Cavaliers finally ended their record breaking losing streak of 26 games by beating the Los Angeles Clippers for their ninth win of the season.

Oh, what it must be like to play in Cleveland.

Fortunately for the Cavs, they had a streak of good success in the last couple of years. Many other professional sports teams haven't had that privilege in a long, long time.

No. 10. Charlotte Bobcats

While the Charlotte Bobcats aren't too terrible of a team, they are probably the most "boring" team in the NBA.

Since its founding in 2004, the Bobcats have made the playoffs just once, and haven't won more than 44 games.

Michael Jordan, who currently owns the Bobcats, still has some work to do until his team can truly compete for titles.

No. 9. Toronto Raptors

Chris Bosh leaving Toronto for a trip to South Beach spelled doom for the Raptors.

They currently own a record of 15-40 and are led by Jose Calderon? Or maybe Andrea Bargnani?

Either way, the Raptors are in bad shape for the future. It doesn't help that Toronto is not a huge basketball market, especially when hockey season is in full swing.

No. 8. Edmonton Oilers

The good thing going for Edmonton is that they have a talented rookie in Taylor Hall who was taken first overall in last years amateur draft.

The bad thing is that they are the worst team in the NHL, again.

Although Edmonton is a hockey town, and the fans love their team, they haven't had anything to cheer for in quite some time.

The Oilers haven't reached the playoffs since 2006 when they lost in the finals to Carolina, and it looks as if they still have a long way to go.

The Buffalo Bills finished the 2010 season with a record of 4-12, giving them the third overall pick in the 2011 draft.

Not only that, but the Bills haven't even made the playoffs since 1999.

The fans love their team, but they don't get much publicity playing in the same market as the Giants, Jets, and even Patriots.

No. 6. Seattle Mariners

The only thing the Seattle Mariners fans have to look forward to every year is an elite pitcher, as well as the consistent performance of Ichiro.

Seattle finished last year with a record of 61-101, which was the worst record in the American League, and second worst in baseball.

Since the Ken Griffey Jr. years, Seattle hasn't done much of anything. Since 2002, the Mariners have failed to make the playoffs every year.

With their roster looking as poor as it has ever been, all Mariners fans should be hoping for is maybe a Cy Young award from Felix Hernandez.

No. 5. Pittsburgh Pirates

The only team in MLB worse than the Seattle Mainers last year was the Pittsburgh Pirates.

For the few Pirates fans left out there, not all hope is lost. Along with the first overall draft pick the Pirates will receive, they also have some young talented players like Andrew McCutchen and Garret Jones.

After the 1992 season, the Pirates started rebuilding, but have not reached the playoffs since then.

Their 18 season losing streak is the longest of any professional sports team.

No. 4. Cleveland Cavaliers

Last year, I wouldn't argue if you said that playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers is one of the best jobs in sports.

Now that the Lebron James drama has come and gone, the city is basically left in ruins.

The Cavaliers just ended their 26 game losing streak, which is the worst losing streak in NBA history.

Cleveland has no leaders, and barely any talent at all. Their fans and owner are still furious at James, and are taking it out on the current team.

It must be tremendously difficult for Mo Williams and any of the other current players to perform under such pressure.

No. 3. Detroit Lions

8 of 10

The Detroit Lions have almost had zero chance to make the playoffs in the last decade. They either had to beat out Brett Favre, Adrian Peterson, Aaron Rodgers, or the mighty Bears defense.

Detroit just could not compete in that division with the talent it has had.

Matthew Stafford was drafted by Detroit with the first overall pick of the NFL draft, but has been injury plagued every year since his rookie season a few years ago.

The Lions best chance to make the playoffs since 1999 might be next year, if they can stay healthy, but that is a big if.

No. 2. New York Islanders

9 of 10
PITTSBURGH, PA - FEBRUARY 02: Rick DiPietro #39 of the New York Islanders mixes it up against Brent Johnson #1 of the Pittsburgh Penguins at Consol Energy Center on February 2, 2011 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Penguins shut out the Islanders 3-0.

Rick Dipietro lasted about as long in his fight against Brent Johnson as the New York Islanders lasted in contention for the playoffs this year.

The Islanders haven't made the playoffs since 2007,and haven't won their division since 1987.

The Islanders also have been overshadowed by the New York Rangers for a long time, and their current position in the standings isn't helping that cause.

No. 1. Kansas City Royals

Although the Royals weren't horrible last season, they let their ace in Zack Greinke go the Brewers in the off season which could lead to disaster.

The Royals haven't even been in contention since the George Brett era, and have posted a winning record only once in the past 15 seasons.

Kansas City doesn't have a high baseball market and no big name player will want to sign there. The only chance the Royals have of getting back into contention is through their farm system.

Maybe someday Kansas City will be a powerhouse again, but that day will not come soon.
