Carmelo Anthony May Sign an Extension With the Denver Nuggets: Good Move or Bad?
As the NBA rumors continue to swirl whether Carmelo Anthony is going east to NY or west to LA to play with Kobe, Melo might end up staying exactly where he is now: The Mile High City.
As the February 24th NBA trade deadline looms near, Anthony has told many media outlets that if a trade does not pan out between now and the deadline that would benefit all teams involved, then he would “take a real hard look” into signing an extension with the Denver Nuggets.
The latest extension deal the Nuggets offered the All-Star remains at three years, $65 million, but Melo has been adamant that he wants to keep his options open.
According to latest reports from Chris Broussard of ESPN the Magazine, the best deal on the block is a three team deal between the New York Knicks, Minnesota Timberwolves and the Denver Nuggets that would send Anthony to the Knicks, Anthony Randolph and Eddy Curry to the Timberwolves and Corey Brewer and Wilson Chandler plus a first round pick to the Nuggets.
All teams would seem to win if this were the case and Melo would be especially pleased to see his dream of playing in New York alongside Amare Stoudemire come true, while Denver would receive athletes and a pick to rebuild their team around.
Although the Timberwolves have been vocal that receiving just Randolph and Curry with Brewer and a first round selection going to Denver would not be enough to get the trade done from their perspective, additional players added to the mix could eventually close the deal.
However, this transaction is far from being a realization for any club and as it sits with less than a month away until the trade deadline, Melo could always take the easy route and sign an extension.
"As the days go on, that's something that I think about, that nothing might happen, that I'll be here, whether I have to deal with the free-agency market or re-sign the extension here with the Nuggets," Carmelo said.
Anthony is on record saying he has thought extensively about signing the extension to continue his career in Denver, but while he says it won’t be an easy or quick decision; it is definitely an option for him as his current contract expires at the end of this season.
So the question remains: Is Anthony’s impending decision to sign an extension a good or bad move?
As it stands now, that question can only be answered by Carmelo Anthony himself. He has some serious thinking to do and needs to ask himself what he really wants out of his career and if his goals can be attained while still playing in Denver or by moving elsewhere.
In the end, it’s a wait-and-see game for us fans, but if Melo’s smart, he still has plenty of time to make the correct decision about his career.
