WWE SmackDown: Has Kelly Kelly turned into a butterfly?

Gina GeatchesFeb 5, 2011

This week on SmackDown, Kelly Kelly stepped it up and took centre stage with Edge, Dolph Ziggler, Vickie Guerrero and LayCool.

Many fans doubt her microphone skills and wrestling ability, so placing her centre of attention was a risky move. However, she shined like a star come SmackDown.

Everyone has been talking about Kelly Kelly since. From her confrontation on the microphone with Vicki and Dolph, to the brutal slap she laid on Dolph, to her improved wrestling skills, to her main event victory and her emotional leave.

Is it safe to say that Kelly Kelly has come out of her cocoon and turned into a butterfly?

Kelly Kelly was hired by WWE in 2006 through her modeling agency, despite having no wrestling experience or background.

She made her debut on the first episode of ECW on June 13, 2006. She would come out to the arena and striptease for the fans until her on-screen boyfriend, Mike Knox, would drag her backstage. This weekly segment became known as Kelly’s Expose'.

Eventually she became a valet to Mike Knox and became involved in a feud with Knox, Test and the team of Tommy Dreamer and The Sandman.

This feud ended after several months and Kelly Kelly began to take an interest in CM Punk, which caused Knox to become jealous and obsessive.

She then took a leave of absence for six weeks and returned on Jan. 16, 2007, edition of ECW. She then formed the group Extreme Exposure with Layla and Brooke, in which they danced in weekly segments. The group disbanded when Brooke left WWE.

Kelly Kelly debuted on RAW on July 7, 2008, and successfully won her first match with Mickie James against Jillian Hall and Layla.

On the May 18, 2010, episode of RAW Kelly Kelly won a Battle Royal to become the number ones contender for the Diva’s Championship. She won the match against then-champion, Maryse via disqualification. As a result of the match, she had a rematch against the champion but lost via pinfall.

In the 2010 WWE draft, Kelly Kelly was drafted to the SmackDown brand. She quickly started a feud with Laycool and eventually formed a team with Tiffany known as The Blondetourage.

Kelly Kelly earned a championship match at the Money In The Bank PPV in July, but she was unsuccessful.

Tiffany left WWE and Kelly went on to become the mentor of Naomi on Season 3 of NXT. However, Naomi finished second place to Kaitlyn.

Kelly Kelly then became involved in a storyline with Drew McIntyre briefly.  At Royal Rumble 2011, she prevented Vickie Guerrero from interfering in the World Heavyweight Championship match between Edge and Dolph Ziggler. The interference by Kelly Kelly seemed random and out of place.

But everything changed when Kelly Kelly came out on the following SmackDown and showed Vickie a piece of her mind. She showed passion and raw emotion in her segment with Vickie and Dolph, and this only continued in her segment with Edge later on in the night.

She took a hard bump in her match and went on to win the match for her team. However, Vicki fired her shortly after and Kelly Kelly left the ring sobbing and wiping away her tears.

I have never seen Kelly Kelly perform so well during a show and I am really excited to see where she turns up next in WWE.

Will she return to SmackDown and vow revenge? Or will she go back to Raw and chase the championship?

Regardless of were she goes next, she really stepped it up on SmackDown and showed her potential on the microphone.
