Jimmer Fredette: What Does Big Night Mean for BYU Star's NBA Stock?
Jimmer Fredette of BYU had himself quite the ball game in what might have been the biggest game in the history of the Mountain West Conference on Wednesday night.
The senior guard scored 43 points and led the ninth-ranked Cougars to a 71-58 upset of the fourth-ranked San Diego State Aztecs.
While this isn't the first time Fredette has gone off this season, the fact that he did it against the previously undefeated Aztecs is no small feat.
How does this performance impact BYU going forward? How does it impact Fredette's NBA Draft stock?
Let's take a look, shall we?
How BYU Is Affected
1 of 2
For the Cougars, the win, and Fredette's performance, couldn't be more monumental. After all, 13-point wins over top-five opponents aren't exactly falling out of the sky in college basketball, and star players don't typically drop 43 points on them, either.
With a win like this, the Cougars have to now be considered favorites for the Mountain West title. They've looked good all season long, and a convincing win over a top team like San Diego State will be a big boost to their hopes come March.
We knew the Cougars wouldn't back down against tough competition and with a scorer like Fredette, they've got a chance to make a deep run in the tournament.
Is His Draft Stock Affected?
2 of 2
Fredette's NBA draft stock can only rise after the kind of performance he delivered in this one. The Cougars' guard was already widely seen as a first-round pick thanks to his scoring touch, which ranks among the best in college basketball.
We know there are concerns about Jimmer's ability to replicate this kind of performance in the NBA, but we heard similar questions coming out about Stephen Curry out of Davidson.
But much like Curry, Fredette is turning heads and changing minds with each massive outing he puts up. This was his third 40-point outburst in his last four games, and with his stock currently sitting in the 13-to-17 pick range of the first round, he could keep climbing if games like this keep happening.
