Super Bowl XLV: 15 Prop Bets That Are Locks
Super Bowl XLV is set and there are a number of storylines to focus on going into the big game. Green Bay has been designated as the early favorite, according to Vegas Sports Book. The Packers are getting 2.5 points against the Steelers.
In reality this is probably more like a pick 'em game, and that 2.5 point number will probably come down in the next 13 days.
However, we aren't going to focus on the standard bets for this year's Super Bowl. Instead we are going to look at the prop bets that you can bet on going into the game. Every year there are a vast number of funny, intriguing prop bets that Vegas puts out and you can win a lot of money on them.
An example of a prop bet that has been used in the past is "How many times will The Who's Pete Townsend do his windmill move?" The line set on that was 5.5.
These prop bets are very funny and they give a person who wouldn't normally be interested in the Super Bowl (if there is such a thing) a reason to be invested in the goings-on of the game.
Here are 15 Super Bowl prop bets that are guaranteed locks to happen on February 6.
Will The Coin Flip Go Heads Or Tails?
1 of 15
This is always one of the more interesting prop bets that is out there every single year. I can’t imagine that there would be a lot of money to be won, but it does give those that bet on it and win a little bit of an ego boost.
There’s really no need to go into any kind of detail about this bet since it's straightforward. If you want to guarantee yourself a win you could bet both ways, but that takes the chance out of the bet and that’s not fun.
Will The Black Eyed Peas Get “Bleeped” Out?
2 of 15
The NFL is bringing in The Black Eyed Peas to perform at this year’s Super Bowl halftime show. It’s a somewhat risky move, given how cautious the league has been since Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction.
Could the Peas find themselves with a language malfunction as they perform in front of 100 million people on national television?
We will find out on February 6.
How Long Does Christina Aguilera Take To Sing The National Anthem?
3 of 15
One of my favorite prop bets before any major sporting event is how long will it take [random singer] to finish the National Anthem.
It’s been announced that Christina Aguilera is going to perform the anthem this year. She does have a loving relationship with her voice. I would set the over/under at 3.5 minutes.
Will There Be A Wardrobe Malfunction?
4 of 15
It’s the risk that the NFL is taking by bringing in a raucous and somewhat raunchy singing group to perform at the halftime show. On a sleazy level, I wouldn’t mind one bit if Fergie had some kind of wardrobe issue during the 12 minutes on stage.
Given how protective the NFL has been with the halftime show since Janet Jackson showed the world her right breast, it’d be stunning if anything actually happened. That doesn’t mean we can’t hope for something though, right?
Will The Black Eyed Peas Be Sober When Performing?
5 of 15
There was an incident a few years back at a Black Eyed Peas concert in which the group took the stage quite inebriated. As a result, Fergie had to go to the bathroom but she couldn’t make it off the stage before she went.
With that charming story comes this prop bet.
In front of so many people it’s hard to fathom something so grotesque, but would it really be the worst thing that we’ve ever seen? I would prefer that to anything that’s ever been on Jersey Shore.
How Many American Idol Commercials Will Air?
6 of 15
The beauty of the Super Bowl is that the network carrying it is going to promote the bejesus out of every show that they have. Fox has the game this year and their biggest cash cow is American Idol.
Given how much the network loves to promote that show and this is the most watched event of the year, the over/under could logically be set at 322,000. Don’t be surprised if it goes over that amount.
How Many Times Will Joe Buck Say The Word “Glee?”
7 of 15
One of the most annoying things about this Super Bowl is the fact that Fox will air their hit show Glee following the game. That is going to lead to an overabundance of Glee references on this show. You could make a case that Glee will get more air time during the Super Bowl than American Idol.
The show, which has been completely steered off course due to its popularity, will lead to a number of glee or happy references from announcer Joe Buck. Let’s hope that he doesn’t oversaturate the world by using this word more than 432,373 times during the telecast.
For the record, I did watch the show in the first season and early in the second, but I gave up when it became all about using popular songs and not actually telling coherent stories.
How Many People Will Be At The Game Who Star On Fox Television Shows?
8 of 15
One of the worst things about Fox is that they take actors from their most popular shows and plop them in the stands for a sporting event. We have all seen it, like at the World Series when the kids from That 70’s Show were sitting in Fenway Park cold and miserable just so Fox could put them on television and remind the world that their show was on.
Ryan Seacrest will probably be there, just because anything having to do with Fox and a live telecast has to feature the Idol host. There will probably be at least 20 other people from Fox shows that don’t actually care about the game, but they got a free ticket, so they figured why not go?
Will Christina Aguilera Miss A Note During The National Anthem?
9 of 15
This one is a little mean-spirited, but nonetheless it could still be funny.
Don’t count on Miss Aguilera screwing up during the anthem, though. She has a lovely voice and is a very talented singer. She will probably hit it out of the park. Of course thinking about that reminds you of Whitney Houston singing in 1991, probably the greatest rendition of the anthem at a Super Bowl.
How Many Times Does Joe Buck Raise His Voice?
10 of 15
If you are a sports fan, how do you not love Joe Buck? He doesn’t try to make his voice the story of the events that he is covering. He gives you exactly what you want from a play-by-play announcer.
That being said, when something, anything happens Buck’s voice always goes up a couple decibel levels. He will raise his voice for anything and it brings a level of excitement and intrigue to the game that otherwise wouldn’t be there.
Who Will Have More Turnovers, Rodgers Or Roethlisberger?
11 of 15
Now we get back into the actual football prop bets.
Will Rodgers or Roethlisberger hurt their team more in this Super Bowl? After their performances in the conference championship games, this is a very difficult proposition. A slight edge, if you want to call it that, would go to Roethlisberger just because the Packers secondary is more aggressive going for interceptions.
Who Will Score The Game’s First Touchdown?
12 of 15
Whenever Vegas put out the odds on this one they always list all the obvious choices and then there is one section where you can bet on “anyone else.” It’s funny when you look at who else could possibly be left to score a touchdown after they put up every skill player on offense and the big-time defenders.
I guess there is the off-chance that a kicker could be near a tackle, the player carrying the ball fumbles it, the kicker picks it up and has blocking in front of him to run all the way into the end zone for a touchdown. That kicker would be Super Bowl MVP, no questions asked if that ever happened.
Smart money would be on Aaron Rodgers, given how quick the Packers offense scores and how good he is with his feet.
How Will The First Points Be Scored?
13 of 15
If you want to take a chance and win a whole lot of money, you would bet safety. For the conference championship games, “safety” had 100-1 odds. If you were to put good money down on that and it actually happened, you wouldn’t have to work again.
Sadly, the Steelers aren’t playing the Jets again so a safety doesn’t seem very likely in this game. Although stranger things have happened in Super Bowls before, like Leon Lett celebrating before he actually scored.
In this kind of game which could be a defensive battle, smart money is on a field goal.
What Will Be The Result Of The Opening Kickoff?
14 of 15
This bet is to give some love to the kicker. Although it’s not really about the kicker because it’s all about what happens after he kicks the ball off. Poor kickers can’t get any love no matter what happens.
The kicker does get some credit if the result is a touchback. Other than that, everything else rests on the return team. If you want to study the kickers for the teams and learn how many touchbacks they had on the season or where the team's average starting position was, then this is the bet for you.
Over/Under 1.5 15-Yard Penalties Called
15 of 15
If I were a gambler, it would be tempting to take the over on something like this. These are two physical teams that will want to assert themselves in the biggest game of the year. The adrenaline will be pumping early on and that could lead to some big penalties from both these teams.
Sadly, that probably won't happen because these two teams are so well coached and disciplined that there won't be any dumb mistakes. Still, when a number is only 1.5, it's tempting to go way over and win some money because of it.
