Boston Celtics: Doc Rivers Yet to Sign an Extension, Future Still Up in the Air
The Boston Celtics (50-21) have a had a regular season of ups and downs from day one.
Nearly half the roster has been sidelined due to injury and five new players were acquired in trades and free-agency. Not to mention, boiling controversy with former starting center Kendrick Perkins has made for much chaos in Beantown.
However, after this season, one of the major future free agents for the C's might not actually be a player.
Boston Celtics' head coach Doc Rivers will be entering his last year of his contract in the 2011-2012 NBA season. Despite the season-and-a-half left on his contract, Rivers has yet to make a decision on whether he will suit up as the Celtics' head coach next season.
Rivers has made clear that he wants to spend more time with his family and enjoy watching his sons develop in both basketball and in life.
Much of the success the Celtics have had this season—who currently hold the second-seed in the East and owning the number one defense in the league—can be attributed to the man in suit and tie pacing the sidelines.
The C's ability to overcome this season's challenges has been credited to the play of players like Rajon Rondo and the members of the Big Three, while much of what Rivers plans and prepares goes under the radar. His ability to use role players like a Jeff Green, Glen "Big Baby" Davis and the two O'Neals has helped the Celtics win basketball games despite issues of limited depth due to injury.
Recent rumors suggest Celtics' President of Basketball Operations and General Manager, Danny Ainge, has a contract extension offer on the table for Rivers, who likely won't make a decision until the end of the season. Rivers emphasizes the importance of not having the attention focused on an individual, but on the team itself.
In his tenure with the Boston Celtics, he has a record of 330-233, winning 41 of 71 postseason games. This season, he has arguably had his toughest season as the C's head coach, dealing with a plethora of injuries and last-minute trades before the deadline.
With a championship under his belt and four consecutive seasons with 50 wins, the Celtics organization will undoubtedly be on hands and knees for Rivers to remain as coach come July.
His current contract has him making roughly $5.5 million a year.
