Toronto Raptors Rumors: Raptors Looking To Acquire Timberwolves' Jonny Flynn?
According to Bill Ingram of Hoopsworld, the Toronto Raptors are among seven teams that are interested in acquiring Minnesota Timberwolves point guard Jonny Flynn.
Flynn, who was injured to start out the year, has lost his starting spot to veteran Luke Ridnour and looks like he won't be getting that spot back anytime soon, as Ridnour has played very steadily for the Timberwolves.
The Timberwolves, who are once again one of the worst teams in the NBA, are likely heading towards yet another lottery pick and are looking to trade the former lottery pick.
The team, if they are indeed looking to trade Flynn, is likely targeting Duke point guard Kyrie Irving, who many scouts believe to have a similar game to that of New Orleans Hornets point guard Chris Paul.
In the 2009 draft, the Wolves ended up selecting a point guard duo of Ricky Rubio and Flynn, but it appears as though Rubio's arrival in the NBA is still in question and Flynn's days appear to be numbered.
So the Wolves may have wasted two high lottery picks on players that likely won't be part of the team—Rubio, who may opt to play in Europe and Flynn, who likely will be dealt at the deadline.
The Toronto Raptors, who worked Flynn out extensively before the 2009 NBA draft, were said to be taking him if he lasted to the ninth pick. He was taken by the Timberwolves three picks before, as the Raptors opted to take high-ceiling swingman DeMar DeRozan out of USC.
With the recent trade of Jarrett Jack to New Orleans, the Raptors received combo guard Jerryd Bayless as part of the deal. With question marks regarding his ability to play point in the NBA, the Raptors are looking at options for the backup point guard role to play behind point guard Jose Calderon.
The Raptors currently own two first-round picks and some massive trading chips, which include the expiring contracts of Peja Stojakovic, Reggie Evans, Julian Wright and Sonny Weems, as well as $12.2 million worth of a trade exemption still left over from the Chris Bosh to Miami deal.
The Wolves are said to want either a high-ceiling youngster or a high first-round pick for Flynn.
Flynn last season averaged 13.5 PPG along with 4.4 APG while shooting 41.7 percent from the field.
Those numbers, although don't appear to be that special, were pretty decent since he was a rookie.
Is it worth it for the Raptors?
Personally I don't think it is, unless the Wolves were willing to part with Martell Webster as well, a known three-point sharpshooter instead. His ability to knock down open jumpers, I think, is more needed than a point guard with whom the Raptors already have three players who can handle those duties.
Start improving the roster where they need the improvement: On the wings!
Hopefully, with added trading chips and high draft picks, the Raptors can quickly turn things around.
Now, all that is left to do is wait and be patient and believe in the Raptors management, as hard as it might be right now.
Thoughts?
