Daily Market Trends: Aces Square Off in Boston

Dan FabrizioSep 9, 2008

Moving Today's Market

The headline game on the schedule is game two of a three-game set between the teams battling for the AL East crown. Each team sends their respective ace to the mound, and bettors are pretty evenly split on who to back. Daisuke Matsuzaka (16-2, 2.88 ERA) and the Red Sox are receiving 51% of the public's money line wagers as -151 favorites (Pinnacle) against Scott Kazmir (11-6, 2.99) and the Rays. Even with the bets evenly split, that line has moved from an opening of Boston as -178 favorites. Another such market move takes place in a game featuring another team battling for a division title. Doug Davis (6-8, 4.58) and the Diamondbacks are receiving 56% of money line bets from the public and the road against Barry Zito (9-16, 5.45) and the Giants, but have moved from -125 favorites at Pinnacle to -110 favorites. With the public betting percentages so close, those aren't the type of moves you expect to see. Could Smart Money be backing the Rays and Giants?

Two games with much higher discrepancies in the betting percentages have indications of Smart Money behind the underdog. The Brewers and Jeff Suppan (10-8, 4.56) are receiving 75% of public money line wagers, but their line has moved from an opening of -169 at Pinnacle to -159 against the Reds and Ramon Ramirez (0-0, 2.70). In Minnesota, Nick Blackburn (9-8, 3.71) and the Twins are receiving 78% of money line bets from the public as heavy favorites against the Royals and Brian Bannister (7-14, 5.56). Yet they have moved from a Pinnacle opening as -225 favorites to -204.
