NFL Playoff Scenarios: Ranking Top 10 Potential Super Bowl Matchups

Chris TrapassoDec 20, 2010

NFL playoff scenarios are starting to come into focus, and it's certainly not too early to begin predicting Super Bowl participants.

The Super Bowl will be watched by tens of millions across the globe no matter who plays, but here are the top 10 most compelling Super Bowl matchups.

10. San Diego Chargers vs. New Orleans Saints

This matchup would pit two of the best and underappreciated quarterbacks in the NFL against each other.

Both teams haven't been as consistent as we've come to expect, but if these two squads played in the Super Bowl, there's a good chance we'd see some offensive fireworks.

The Chiefs running game against the Bears run defense. Jamaal Charles against Brian Urlacher. Thomas Jones against Lance Briggs.

This Super Bowl wouldn't be the most glitzy or glamorous, but it'd be fun to watch one of the league's best running attacks against a stout run defense.

A true throwback game.

8. Oakland Raiders vs. NFC West Winner

If this is the matchup for Super Bowl XLV, it would be the culmination of a magical journey for two Cinderella teams who won as underdogs three times to reach the big game.

Star power wouldn't be an issue with guys like Darren McFadden, Nnamdi Asomugha and possibly Steven Jackson, Sam Bradford or Patrick Willis.

7. Indianapolis Colts vs. New Orleans Saints

A Super Bowl rematch is always interesting, and with both teams in playoff contention, this matchup makes the list.

Manning and Brees haven't had the years they had in 2009, but if they reach the pinnacle again, all eyes would be on these two signal-callers with Manning looking to enact revenge while Brees would be out for a repeat.

After their gripping Sunday Night Football game, a re-match between the Packers and Patriots would be extremely intriguing, especially if Aaron Rodgers is playing quarterback for Green Bay.

Matt Flynn almost led the Pack to a win in hostile Gillette Stadium and if Rodgers played, he and Brady would formulate quite the signal-caller combo.

Anytime there's a NYC title game, the world watches. The teams that share the New Meadowlands have similar squads: average offenses that are capable of the occasional explosive play and defenses that can shut you down.

The Big Apple would be torn at the seams over this all-New York Super Bowl.

4. Pittsburgh Steelers vs. New Orleans Saints

This Super Bowl battle would put the last two champions in Dallas and that scenario is always compelling.

The Steelers defense against the Saints spread-'em-out offense.

Could be an instant classic.

3. New England Patriots vs. Atlanta Falcons

Whenever the top two teams can survive and advance to the Super Bowl, it becomes a highly anticipated heavyweight bout.

The young Matt Ryan is emerging as the next Tom Brady

Sky-high ratings for this one.

2. Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Philadelphia Eagles

The battle of Pennsylvania for the Super Bowl title would have the entire planet's attention, and would match the Steelers' nasty defense against the Eagles' offense that's certainly the most dangerous in the NFC.

Could Dick LeBeau contain Mike Vick? Could Andy Reid contain Ben Roethlisberger

This one could be epic.

1. New England Patriots vs. Philadelphia Eagles - With Brady and Vick both battling for the MVP and the Eagles and Patriots as the most electric offenses in the NFL, this one would be a dandy and a ratings dream come true for the NFL.
