Kansas Basketball: Josh Selby Is Special in His First Game As a Jayhawk

Doug BrodessDec 18, 2010

It was a long first semester at Kansas for Josh Selby.

Work hard, practice as much as anyone, but no games until mid-December.

The consequences of accepting impermissible benefits and serving an NCAA-ordered suspension.

Today was his introduction into Jayhawk basketball.

Lots of eyes were on Selby, ranked by most recruiting services as the No. 1 prospect in the nation, to see if he would live up to all of the hype.

Selby checked in with about four minutes gone in the first half to a huge ovation by the home crowd at Allen Fieldhouse.

From the moment he hit the court, Selby showed why almost every elite team in the country recruited him.

The following are some of the highlights from Selby's first game:

Led All Scorers With 21 Points

The Jayhawks have no shortage of people who can put the ball in the hole.

Four Kansas players (the Morris twins, Tyshawn Taylor and Tyrel Reed) are averaging double-figures in scoring this season.

Some freshmen playing in their first game might be a little tentative.

Some teams might not trust "the kid" just yet.

But Selby led all scorers with 21 points.

He scored 10 in the first half and 11 in the second half.

So much for nerves...

Selby had the reputation of being a sharpshooter, able to put the ball in the hole from almost anywhere on the court.

He immediately demonstrated his skills by hitting his first two three-pointers.

Selby ended up hitting five-of-eight from downtown.

Grabbed His Share of Boards

As a 6'2" guard, few people expect Selby to do much work on the boards for the Jayhawks.

Especially having Marcus and Markieff Morris and Thomas Robinson down low.

But Selby grabbed five rebounds, showing that he is not afraid to stick his nose in there and fight for some boards.
