Arizona Diamondbacks: 5 Free Agents That Could Bolster The Team This Winter
The Arizona Diamondbacks need to revamp their lineup to get competitive in the ultra-competitive National League West. Under new GM Kevin Towers, the team is in rebuilding mode and they could use help of five free agents.
No. 5: Fred Lewis OF
1 of 5
The 29-year-old speedy left fielder would provide depth to an outfield that includes Chris Young and Justin Upton.
He could give the D-Backs arguably one of the fastest outfields in baseball. Last season, Young had 28 steals, Upton had 18 steals and Lewis had 17.
No. 4: Rodrigo Lopez SP
2 of 5
The D-Backs desperately need pitching help and the 34-year-old righty's record did not represent the season he had last year.
His record shows he was 7-16 with a 5.00 ERA, but when you take a deeper look, you see a serviceable back-of-the-rotation guy.
He was 2-3 with a 4.33 ERA in the last two months of the regular season but he had six no-decisions in the final two months. With a little more run support he could easily have been above .500 in the win column.
No. 3: Adam LaRoche 1B
3 of 5
The 31-year-old first baseman was one of the positives in the D-Backs' miserable 2009-2010 campaign with 25 homers and 100 RBI.
He still has a couple productive years left in him and gives the D-Backs a solid power option and a reliable defenseman at first. He's also a noticeable upgrade from the two first basemen the D-Backs have now (Brandon Allen and Juan Miranda).
No. 2: Adrian Beltre 3B
4 of 5
There is a glaring hole at 3B now that slugger Mark Reynolds is gone and Beltre is easily the best third basemen on the market.
Although he most likely out of the pay range of the D-Backs, he would give them a reliable defender and a very solid offensive player at 3B (28 homers, 102 RBI, and a .321 average). He also brings the veteran leadership to the table that the D-Backs could use.
No. 1: Brandon Webb SP
5 of 5
The 31-year-old sinkerballer could possibly be the key to the 2010-2011 season.
He was sidelined with a shoulder injury and missed the entire 2009-2010 campaign. When healthy he is one of the best pitchers in the game, as shown with his 2006 Cy Young award. If he is re-signed, the rotation would be immediately bolstered and the team would be drastically better.
He should be the No. 1 priority for GM Kevin Towers this offseason.
