Tim Lincecum heading a talented group of young pitchers

Scott BirchfieldSep 2, 2008

Each year, there seem to be those pitchers who blossom in a short period of time. This year is no exception. Here is my top 10 young pitchers for 2008:

1- Tim Lincecum- Although he plays for a poor team right now, he has definitely become the team's ace. He is 15-3 with over 200 K's through August. He is a young pitcher who will only get better.

2. Edinson Volquez-Volquez is dominating despite playing for a horrible team. He is 16-5 with an ERA around 3.00. He was a good pickup in the Josh Hamilton trade.

3. Armando Gallaraga- Because he plays for Detroit, Gallaraga has flown under the radar. He has been a bright spot in an otherwise dismal year for the Tigers.

4. Glen Perkins- Perkins plays for AL Central contenders, the Minnesota Twins. He has been a big part of their success. He has a 12-3 record. He rarely gets strikeouts, but he is a winner.

5. Matt Garza- After a slow start, Garza has become one of the Rays best pitchers. His 11-7 record does not truly show you his worth. Trading Delmon Young and Brendan Harris for Garza and Jason Bartlett was one of the best trades I have seen in awhile.

6. Jair Jurjens- The Braves were lucky to get a talent like Jurjens in the deal for Edgar Renteria. Although he has struggled a bit lately, Jurjens has had a really good season. The fact that he will only be 23 at the start of next season is something for the Braves to be happy about.

7. Mike Pelphrey- The Mets rotation has been an up and down most of the season. However,Mike Pelphrey has been a nice surprise for that rotation. He is 13-8 with a 3.66 ERA. He is helping the Mets to stay in the playoff race.

8. Chad Billingsley- Although the Dodgers are the worst of the playoff contenders, Billingsley has been a consistent starting pitcher. His 13 wins lead the club.

9. J.P. Howell- The Rays made a great move by moving Howell to the bullpen. Howell has responded by posting a 6-0 record with a very low ERA.

10. Gavin Floyd- After struggling with the Phillies, Floyd received a fresh start with the Chicago White Sox. After a tough 2007 season with Chicago, Floyd has responded with an impressive 15-6 record.
