John Wall, Washington Wizards Concocting Promising Spell for the Future

Brandon GalvinNov 30, 2010

We knew when the Wizards landed the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 draft that their franchise would be turned around for the better. Point guard John Wall is a dynamic superstar. He is a franchise-rejuvenating player with incredible ball handling skills and leaping ability.

Wall still needs to develop a more consistent shot, but he is very good at driving to the basket ala Derrick Rose and his quick hands drive his ball hawking skills on defense a la Rajon Rondo.

Although many are praising the Miami Heat’s “Big Three” for their win over the Wizards on November 29, it was a more promising loss for the Wizards than anything else. An 11-point loss to the LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh’s Heat is nothing to frown regardless of the Heat’s woes at the moment. The Wizards backcourt would have had quite the advantage with both John Wall and Gilbert Arenas in the lineup.

Gilbert Arenas may still be viewed as a cancer to many, including myself, for this young squad, but he held his own with 23 points, five rebounds and seven assists. If Wall was out there to dish the ball to Arenas on the wing with his driving ability, this game would have been much closer.

It is more important to note the growing chemistry between John Wall and JaVale McGee. McGee was right around his season average with 10 points and 10 rebounds. However, the Heat’s post troubles would have been exploited by both Andray Blatche and McGee if the Wizards had Wall out there to distribute the ball to his big men. Andray Blatche had a great game with 26 points and nine rebounds.

The Heat may view their win as a much needed stepping stone in the right direction. The Wizards are the team who should be smiling after this game though. Against three of the top players in the NBA, they only lost by 10 without their x-factor.

If the Wizards were to meet the Heat again with John Wall healthy, the Heat might be left pointing fingers at who is to blame for the loss. LeBron James? Dwyane Wade? Chris Bosh? Erik Spoelstra? Pat Riley? It doesn’t matter, a loss is a loss.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens the next time these two teams face off. The Wizards, despite their youthful inexperience, have the talent to matchup very well against the Heat and their “Big Three.”

Once John Wall returns from injury, all bets are off for the Wizards. This is a young team with nothing to lose each game they play. Their backs are against the wall. They were a bottom of the barrel team filled with turmoil for the past season. They shipped away their superstars Caron Butler and Antawn Jaminson and in return, received the “Great” Wall.

They have the talent to compete with most teams in the league as long as their gifted superstar is on the court to turn this franchise around.
