Giants of the Game: The Greatest Big Men in NBA History

Darko MihajlovskiDec 19, 2010

Welcome back to the "Greatest Ever" series as we continue with the ranks of the greatest big men in the history of the NBA!

The game of basketball has always been a sport of these walking giants whose abilities to dominate on the court can single handily turn your franchise into a championship contender. The league's very first superstar was a center. His name was George Mikan, the old man on the right.

He simply proved the theory that the NBA has been and may still is a game of these giants who with time, just got better. They are generally a bunch of strong guys who can score inside the paint, grab a ton of rebounds, block shots and anchor the defense

The expectations are always off the reality, but when you're great, nothing less than a success is expected, so it kinda gets hard on them. Although they have some similarities, they are different from each other and have their own kind of domination

It's best to build based on these players who are the biggest reasons for the championship runs since the beginning of the league. The Celtics had Bill Russell,Dave Cowens and Robert Parish. Then their rivals, LA, had Kareem, Shaq, Mikan and so on.

They possess different styles. There are big men who rely on their strength and athleticism, but there are some who use their skills and finesse to establish as a strong presence on the court. Most of the members of the list are part of the Greatest Of All Time debate.

There's a young group of so-so promising centers these days led by Howard that are ready to do what these players did years ago. I cannot wait to see that.

In the end, these legends are judged based on their abilities, how they contributed for their team's overall success, wins, resume, championships, legacy, impact etc. Even the little things matter. Here are the finest big men to ever play in the NBA History!

George Mikan

1 of 9

Basketball's first dominant center and superstar, the 6'10" George Mikan was one of the greatest players to ever play in the NBA of all time

He had instant impact regardless where he played (BAA,NBA) and was the marquee player of his era. His contributions to the game are beyond great, and he was such a revolutionary giant that was so dominant that it forced the leagues to set new rules in order to stop him. Now that's incredible

That's why he's by far one of the most dominant players to step on a hardwood. He was a smooth scorer who was a prolific rebounder and shot blocker that was so incredible in the interior on both ends, it caused the gold tending rule to be introduced

He led everyone three times in scoring and twice in rebounding and was a machine that overpowered dozens of opponents, as they were clueless on how to stop his effective sky hooks with either hand.

Mikan was a terrific winner and champion regardless of where he was, as he led the Minneapolis Lakers to five straight championships, averaging league highest 28.4 points at that time and earned the award from the Associated Press for being the best basketball player in the first half of the 20th Century.

What an achievement. On top of that,he was very clutch player who often raised his averages. For  example, he had 28.5 points in the rookie year and 31.5 at some point of his career during the Finals. Amazing!

Here is his career resume

-Five-time NBA Champion

-Elected to the Hall of Fame

-Five-time All-NBA First Team

-All Star Game MVP

-Retired as the NBA's All Time leader in points, rebounds and free throws at that time

-Four-time All Star

-One of the 50 greatest players in the NBA History

-Voted by Associated Press as the best player in basketball's history for the first half of the 20th century

Career Stats

-23.1 points (averaged 28.3 in the BAA),13.4 rebounds,2.8 assists

-10.156 points,4.167 boards,1.245 assists

-Ranks No.2 in playoff player efficiency!

Hakeem Olajuwon

2 of 9

A force in the middle on both ends of the court, Hakeem Olajuwon is another strong candidate for the honor of the greatest big man of all time

He was a phenomenal player who had a very raw combination of athleticism, speed and strength which was a big factor in his dominance. He also had variety of post moves inside to go with numerous fakes, which all became known as the "Dream Shake"

He had a nice jump shot from 18 feet as well and was one of the best defenders in the history of the league, and a case can be made for being on top as well. He not only could put his man on low percent from field, but block shots, get steals and clear the glass

During his peak, he played with some good competition, which included David Robinson, Patrick Ewing and Shaquille O'Neal and beat them all. He's the top off-ball and help defender the game has ever seen and could block nearly four shots a game with at least two steals.

He was a dominant presence on the court which is undeniable, but his strength remains the work he did on defense which is absolutely terrific. He led everyone twice in rebounding, three times in blocks and from a little bit in 4 categories in total for a season

He always raised his game in the playoffs and the most impressive fact of his career that for a big man he was ranked at No.9 overall, that's so impressive and he was one of the few players ever to average at least 25 points and 11 rebounds in the playoffs history.

In recent history, he gained the status of one of the biggest winners as well

Moses Malone

3 of 9

One of the first great high school players that made a direct jump into the pros, Moses Malone was one of the greatest big men of all time.

Not as tall as the other centers, he used fantastic quickness, strength and tenacity to establish himself as a presence on the court. He put phenomenal work on the boards and had a sense for the offensive rebounds with dozen of good post moves and trips to the line.

In other words, he was one of the most dominate players the game has ever seen who during his peak, won three Most Valuable Player awards while leading the Philadelphia 76ers to the Finals where they'd sweep the Lakers, and he earned the Finals MVP as well

He posted some of the most insane numbers in the NBA History. He once averaged 31.4 points with 14.7 rebounds during a season, basically destroying Kareem with 25.8 points and 18 boards during the 1983 Finals.

He was called "Mr Chairman of the boards" and controlled the glass with ease. During his career, he led everyone six times in rebounding, including nine times in offensive rebounds and setting the record for a single season as well

Moses Malone, combined with his NBA/ABA career, recorded amazing numbers and left a strong legacy behind him during his 21-year career. His entrance in the pros coming from high school was historical and opened the gates to follow him.

Tim Duncan

4 of 9

One of the two active players on this list, Tim Duncan stands tall in the debate of the best big men in the NBA History

He's the most consistent and fundamentally sound player the game has ever seen. He maximized his talent by understanding the fundamentals, his high basketball IQ, will to win and natural leadership to be phenomenal out there.

Duncan is one of the most intelligent players of all time who often knows when, where and how to get in a good position because he has never been the explosive athlete. He's got amazing instincts and sense as well.

He's only second to Russell in the style of denying shots and is one of the five greatest shot blockers of any time, due to his perfect timing, not fouling the shooter and tipping the ball to his team mates.Tim is a good passer, an ability recognized by two Hall Of Famers such as Kareem and Russell.

His playing style is often viewed as boring by the younger hoops fans ,but very efficient by the older fans who recognize the greatness, and it goes beyond the stats. Even when he's not getting superior stats, he is still producing in dozens of ways

Duncan is one of the biggest winners to ever step on a basketball court. Period. It's impressive how he is capable of getting high numbers while leading the team to championships and relying on his simple but so effective style

Shaquille O'Neal

5 of 9

One of the two active players to be on this list,Shaquille O'Neal is one of the game's greatest big men of all time.

He's the most unstoppable player and efficient scorer the games has ever seen, who's the best in making a positive impact for his team.He possesses a mix of size, strength, athleticism to go on with nice skills and quickness.

His ability to draw fouls is second to none.If there's a stat like that,he would have led the league in that for sure.He was so strong, very few could be argued as stronger and is the most powerful finisher to ever play.

He's arguably the most physical presence in the league's history, who controlled the paint on both ends of the court, scored efficiently, cleared the glass well, good passer and few have had been more double teamed and sometimes triple teamed.

He's one of the (if not the) most dominate players in the history of basketball, who has been on his finest in the playoffs and finals posting some insane numbers, while winning it all.He was so unguardable that it has forced many to use the "Heck a Shaq" game plan.

That was an attempt that most teams used to stop him since he has been a bad free throw shooter since day one and that was used by teams because it is his biggest weakness.

He's one of the best rebounders of all time, who always cleared the glass well, especially during the clutch time and one of the most overlooked defenders and top shot blockers as well. He's overlooked largely duo to his laziness

Wilt Chamberlain

7 of 9

The greatest offensive force to ever grace the game of basketball, who was the most dominate player of all time,Wilt Chamberlain is without a doubt one of the best big men ever

Nothing short of legendary,he was so dominate largely because he was so strong, held track records and a numerous high jumping world champion as well who was the most doubled and tripled team by far.Teams had no clue how to stop his dominance with fouls

The play was so rough that it forced him to retire in his rookie year but would come back ready for the next season. He had endless stamina which aloud him to play dozens of minutes and had a high basketball IQ that he used well

Wilt during his finest averaged 50 points and 27 rebounds, numbers that will never be touched and was the top individual player who cared to get insane statistics and his overall numbers are second to none, you will see that later

Just how great was Wilt? Oscar Robertson summed it best with the quote on the question is he the greatest of all time, "The books don't lie". That's good answer, considering the fact that this guy holds 60 of the 72 NBA records!

Want some records? How about 100 points in a single games, 55 rebounds in a single game, only player to score 4,000 points in a season, scored 50 ppg through an entire season, and grabbed 27 boards, too.

He was arguably the most notable rebounding machine to play on a NBA hardwood, period.During his 15 years of pro basketball,he won the rebound titles 11 times in that period while winning 7 scoring titles as well

He was also phenomenal defender as well, who would likely been No.2 (or No.1) had blocks been as a official stat. His steals total would be high as well.He is one of the most all-around players ever, for who many believe he recorded quadruple double before it became official.

Kareem Abdul Jabbar is one of the best big men ever, who is arguably the greatest basketball player of all time.
