Maryland Beats College of Charleston on Shot in Final Seconds

Chris LeydenNov 10, 2010

Pe'Shon Howard hit a shot from just outside the paint with four seconds left to lead the University of Maryland over the College of Charleston, 75-74.

The freshman finished the game with 14 points on 6 of 7 shooting, and made an even stronger argument to be the team's starting point guard.

Jordan Williams also had a big game, with a career-high 26 points and 15 rebounds. Williams has pulled down 15 rebounds in both games to start the Terps season.

Sean Mosley, who scored 21 in the win on Monday, only had three points Wednesday on 1 of 5 shooting.

Adrian Bowie, the starting point guard for the Terps, had a better night Thursday, but has simply been outplayed by the freshman guards in the first two games. It will be interesting to see how long Gary Williams keeps the senior starting, because as Howard proved tonight, he is ready for the spotlight.

The College of Charleston was led by stellar play from Andrew Goudelock, who led all scorers with 29 points, also pulling down 10 rebounds. The Terps rotated who would cover Goudelock, but could not find a player to slow him down.

Gary Williams' face said it all after the game as he looked angry that the Terps let Charleston even have a shot of taking home a victory. Meanwhile the Maryland players were running around the court celebrating after the final shot for Charleston rimmed out.

Maryland could have easily won the game had it made a few more free throws, as it was 5 for 18 on the night.

Next, Maryland welcomes Maine to the Comcast Center on Sunday the 14th, before heading off to New York to take on No. 4 Pittsburgh and either No. 16 Illinois or No. 25 Texas. If the Terps want any chance of upsetting any of these ranked opponents, they are going to have to grow up a lot in the next week.

Maryland moved to 2-0 on the season, while Charleston dropped to 0-1.
