NFL Coaching Carousel: Josh McDaniels and 5 Others Who Should Get Canned

Andy BaileyNov 2, 2010

Josh McDaniels' coaching seat is about as hot as any in the NFL this year. He's made plenty of questionable moves since his arrival in Denver, and he's hearing it from Denver fans.

A lot of people didn't expect Denver to make the playoffs, but not many thought they'd be this bad.

McD's not the only one. We're about halfway through this NFL season, and we've already had plenty of teams surprise us with their ineffectiveness.

It's becoming increasingly difficult to be a coach in professional sports these days. If they don't win right away or have one bad season, their jobs are in jeopardy.

This list will show six coaches who may not be in charge of their current teams by the start of next season.

Marvin Lewis

The Cincinnati Bengals were talking Super Bowl prior to the start of this season.

They made headlines by signing free agent wide receiver Terrell Owens. They added T.O. and rookie tight end Jermaine Gresham to an already talented receiving corps that included Chad Ochocinco.

They also have a solid quarterback in Carson Palmer, and running back Cedric Benson ran for over 1,200 yards last year.

And that's just their offense. Last year, they made it into the playoffs on the backs of their defenders.

This season, neither the defensive or offensive unit has been effective.

Marvin Lewis is supposed to be a defensive specialist, and his Bengals are 20th against the pass and 23rd against the run.

John Fox

The Carolina Panthers weren't supposed to be good this year, but they also shouldn't be this bad. They're 1-6 on the season, and they have one of the worst offenses in the NFL.

There isn't a whole lot of talent in the passing game, but the poor running game is inexcusable when you have DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart.

Carolina needs more talent on the field, but they may also need a fresh approach on the sidelines as well.

Mike Singletary

Talk about underachievers. The San Francisco 49ers have been one of the most disappointing teams in the NFL this year. They play in one of the worst divisions in football, and they're in last place.

The worst part about it, they were just about everyone's pick to win the NFC West.

This team is loaded with talent on both sides of the ball. On offense, they have Michael Crabtree, Frank Gore and Vernon Davis. They have a solid offensive line as well. The problem has been at quarterback.

I like Alex Smith as much as the next guy. For some reason, I've always wanted him to do well and prove his doubters wrong. At this point, though, it's probably time for this team to move on.

On defense, they have solid players in Manny Lawson, Justin Smith, Takeo Spikes, Taylor Mays and others. Plus, they have a linebacker named Patrick Willis that may be the best defensive player in football.

2-6 is not the record San Fran fans were expecting for the first half of the season.

Wade Phillips

So much for the Dallas Cowboys being the first team to host and play in the Super Bowl. They're 1-6, and they have several difficult games left on the schedule. It would take a near miracle for this team to even reach 8-8.

Wade Phillips' seat isn't just hot—it's scalding. There were rumors about this guy getting the boot last year. There's little doubt Jerry Jones will actually pull the trigger this time.

The talent on this team led a lot of people to predict they'd win the Super Bowl prior to the start of the season. Penalties, poor defense and the second worst rushing attack in the league derailed those hopes. Losing Tony Romo didn't help either.

Brad Childress

In my opinion, Childress has been worse than Phillips (who most people think has done the worst job). Minnesota is 2-5, and the Vikings have arguably the most talented team in the NFC.

They have the best running back in football. They have some of the best defensive linemen in the league. They have a solid receiving corps, a good offensive line and of course, Brett Favre.

Which leads me to my next point: Why on Earth did they even bring this guy along in the first place? Favre has done nothing but press pause on the development of this team. I called for him to retire nearly a month ago. They really need to bench him now.

Now there's the whole Randy Moss debacle. This team is in shambles. Childress could very well be done.

Josh McDaniels

McDaniels' job is looking less secure each week. They've lost their last four games, including a 59-14 drubbing at the hands of the Oakland Raiders and their most recent loss to the previously 1-6 San Francisco 49ers.

The Broncos' running game is absolutely horrific. They are dead last in the NFL at 67.3 yards per game. This is particularly hard for Broncos fans to stomach considering how consistent the team was on the ground for several years under Mike Shanahan.

McDaniels basically drew a line in the sand as soon as he got this job, and every week more people cross to the side opposed to the coach.

He got off to a great start on the merits of strong defense last season. They started 6-0. Since then, they're 4-14.

If Denver wants to find any light at the end of this tunnel, they may want to look for someone else to lead them out of it.
