Tony Romo Injury: 15 Fantasy QBs You Can Still Pick Up
Tony Romo's injury didn't just sink the Dallas Cowboy's playoff hopes, it might have seriously crippled a lot of fantasy teams as well.
But that's why there are waiver wires and trades.
Not every quarterback is going to be throwing for 400 yards every week and, depending on the defense, even a good quarterback can have a mediocre day.
Or, in the case of Tom Brady last week, a good quarterback can just not show up. Not that anyone lost any points in that game or anything like that.
So here are 15 quarterbacks Tony Romo widows might be able to get this week.
15. Shaun Hill
1 of 15
Shaun Hill has done a decent job of filling in for Matthew Stafford, and even with the possibility of Stafford coming back this week, it's a good idea to have Hill as a backup.
Hill has earned 78 fantasy points so far this season, averaging out to 13 points a week.
Should Hill play, he'll be facing the Washington Redskins, who had a great day versus Jay Cutler.
Projection: Hill could get 250 yards and two touchdowns, earning 22 points.
14. Jason Campbell
2 of 15
Jason Campbell had his best day as a Raider in Denver this past Sunday and, should he get the nod to start versus the Seahawks, he could have another good day as the Seahawks are rated 29th against the pass so far this year.
The incredible game of Darren McFadden though, could limit any Raiders quarterback numbers.
Campbell's average of 5.7 points is pretty bad, but that includes a game against Tennessee and one half of a game versus St. Louis.
Projection: Campbell can get 200 yards and two touchdowns versus the Seahawks, earning 20 points.
13. David Garrard
3 of 15
David Garrard is expected to return to action this week after his concussion. While Garrard's numbers have not been stellar, they play the Dallas Cowboys this week.
The Cowboys, now minus the quarterback you were starting, also have a decent pass defense.
Projection: Garrard has a decent day, if an unspectacular one, throwing for 175 yards and one touchdown, earning 13 points.
12. Tarvaris Jackson
4 of 15
If Brett Favre is out Sunday—and with the news Favre has two ankle fractures, that's very likely—Tarvaris Jackson will get the start.
Jackson has taken no snaps in 2010 and took very few in 2009, making any kind of fantasy prediction difficult. In addition, the Vikings may decide to just focus on Adrian Peterson and the running game, which isn't a bad idea if you want to win a game.
The Vikings play the Patriots this week, a team that has given up a ton of points to Buffalo and San Diego this year. That means Jackson could have a good day, especially since the most recent regular-season game film on him really is two years old at this point.
Projection: Jackson could surprise a lot of people and really ignite a quarterback controversy in Minnesota by throwing for 275 yards and two touchdowns, earning 23 points.
11. Matt Moore
5 of 15
Matt Moore is back in the saddle in Carolina and fresh off of a win against San Francisco, where he threw for 308 yards and two touchdowns with one interception.
Moore faces the St. Louis Rams this week in another battle of rebuilding teams. Moore averages four points a week but once again there's a caveat to that stat, that being Moore plays for the Carolina Panthers.
Projection: Moore won't be great, but he should be good enough to throw for 175 yards and one touchdown, earning 13 points.
10. Alex Smith
6 of 15
Alex Smith is nursing a shoulder injury, but it's his non-throwing shoulder, increasing the likelihood he'll play on Sunday.
Smith needs to play to keep his job, although David Carr didn't exactly do anything to take it from Smith on Sunday.
Smith averages 11.6 points per week, and he'll be facing the Denver Broncos defense, which gave up 59 points to Oakland this past week.
Projection: The Broncos are reeling, and if Smith plays, he'll have a good day, throwing for 250 yards and three touchdowns, earning 22 points.
9. David Carr
7 of 15
David Carr will get the start if Smith can't go. Carr did nothing to make fantasy owners want him Sunday, but facing the Denver defense does provide an opportunity for points.
There's no real history on Carr for 2010, who earned zero points in the game Sunday.
Projection: Carr will get points against Denver, throwing for 150 yards and one touchdown, adding up to 12 points.
8. Matt Cassel
8 of 15
Matt Cassel hasn't been the quarterback in Kansas City he was in New England, but it's not like he's a bad quarterback. With Charlie Weis leading the offense this year, Cassel has looked better than last year
Cassel earns an average of 11.7 points per week, and this week he's going up against the Buffalo Bills, a team that played the New England Patriots very well last week.
Projection: Cassel will throw for 175 yards and two touchdowns on the day, earning 19 points.
7. Chad Henne
9 of 15
Chad Henne hasn't been a real big points-grabber this year, but he does have Brandon Marshall catching the ball, and that's bound to pay dividends at some point.
Henne faces the Cincinnati Bengals this week and the Falcons proved last week that you can score on them through the air.
Projection: Look at what Matt Ryan and Roddy White did last week. Henne gets three touchdowns on 300 yards, earning 35 points.
6. Matt Hasselback
10 of 15
Matt Hasselback is an enigma. Hasselback plays for a coach known for developing quarterbacks, yet his numbers aren't that great.
Hasselback averages 11.5 points per week, and that's probably not going to change this week versus Oakland
Projection: Hasselback continues to struggle, throwing for 150 yards and one touchdown, earning 12 points.
5. Mark Sanchez
11 of 15
Mark Sanchez originally projected as a fantasy dream, but his 2009 numbers scared most owners away. While the Jets have been winning games, Sanchez' fantasy numbers aren't a real big contributing factor.
Sanchez averages 12.3 points per week, and this week the Jets face Green Bay and a defense that features Clay Matthews.
Projection: Sanchez will be OK, not great, throwing for 200 yards and two touchdowns, earning 20 points.
4. Ryan Fitzpatrick
12 of 15
Ryan Fitzpatrick has been doing a fairly decent job with a very bad team. The Bills put up a lot of points against New England and Baltimore, with Fitzpatrick throwing for four touchdowns last week
Fitzpatrick faces the Chiefs and the Romeo Crennel-led defense, which surprisingly ranks 25th against the pass
Projection: Fitzpatrick gets 250 yards and three touchdowns, which may not be enough to win, but it will get you 28 points.
3. Sam Bradford
13 of 15
Sam Bradford has impressed people so far in his rookie season, but he hasn't impressed fantasy owners. Since the two concepts don't always intertwine, Rams fans are happy and fantasy owners are sad.
Bradford earns an average of 10.6 points per week, and that's not going to change too much versus Carolina, which despite its shortcomings, actually has a pretty good pass defense, ranked fourth overall in the league.
Projection: Bradford has another solid day, throwing for 175 yards and two touchdowns, earning 19 points.
2. Matthew Stafford
14 of 15
Matthew Stafford has been practicing with the Lions starters and there is a good possibility he returns to the field this Sunday when the Lions face the Washington Redskins
Stafford has the potential to tear up the Redskins, who rank 31st against the pass this season.
Stafford has no real averages this season, having only played part of one game before getting injured
Projection: Stafford is going to come out and light it up, throwing for 250 yards and three touchdowns, earning you 28 points.
1. Jon Kitna
15 of 15
Hey, look! It's Jon Kitna!
Kitna will get the start for the Cowboys going forward. While we can sit here and debate his individual talents, he still has the Dallas machine behind him.
Okay, maybe that wasn't such a good point to try and make right now.
Kitna had 187 yards and two touchdowns with one fumble and earned 13 fantasy points after he came into the game.
Projection: Kitna is going to be surprisingly good versus a Jacksonville Jaguars team that isn't very good so far this year. Kitna, in the pass-heavy offense Dallas runs, still could throw for 300 yards and three touchdowns, earning 29 points.
