2010 Dallas Cowboys Are the Biggest Debacle in the History of American Sports

Paul RangelOct 25, 2010

It will take the end of the 2010 NFL season to make it official, but when they leave Philadelphia on January 2nd, 2011 with a final record of 3-13, it will cap the greatest debacle in the history of professional sports in America. NOTHING compares to this.

They have the second highest payroll in the league (only behind the Raiders and they give outrageous contracts to anyone) and nine returning Pro-Bowlers from a season ago, in which they went 11-5 and finally broke through in the playoffs.

Every major sports outlet picked them to go to the playoffs and quite a few picked them to be the first team to host and play in the Super Bowl. Anything less than that is a bust and they'll admit that themselves.

But here we are, seven weeks into the season and they are melting down in epic fashion. The word "epic" gets tossed around too much these days, but that's the proper adjective to describe this unmitigated disaster of a season.

Romo's injury isn't an excuse for them either. They were 1-4 with him through six-and-a-half games. He wasn't leading them to any victories when he was healthy. Besides, the Steelers went 3-1 without Roethlisberger, so teams can adapt and pull together without their starting quarterback.

The '08 Yankees, '04-05 Pacers, '06-07 Mavericks, '03 Cubs/Red Sox, '64 Phillies, '95 Angels, and any other team you can think of don't hold a candle to this catastrophe.

They all had a respectable level of success compared to this Cowboys team.

Their offense and defense both rank in the Top Five, yet they have one win to show for it. They averaged 400 yards per game going into Week 7, while allowing under 300 yards per game and could only muster a single win.

Week after week they have the same bone-headed penalties (see: leapfrog celebration) and turnovers and there is absolutely no indication that any of it is going to change.

They should be embarrassed, but they aren't...so why should they be embarrassed?

Nobody in that organization is holding them accountable for their pitiful play and Wade Phillips's perpetual blank stare isn't going to start motivating them next week either.

If Jerry Jones were serious about this team and his franchise, Phillips would be out the door tomorrow morning (along with Jason Garrett) and he'd place a blank check in front of Bill Cowher (or somebody with a history of winning) and try to right the ship.

But he won't, even with his nearly endless supply of money.

Cowboys fans will have to suffer for the remainder of the season, while the rest of us enjoy every second!
