Brett Favre Loses to His Green Bay Packers and Needs to Retire From The NFL Now

Kenneth MOct 25, 2010

There is no denying that Brett Favre is a legend. Like the old gunslinger from a black and white western movie, past his prime and looking for redemption, Brett Favre is on one last mission. And just like that old western, here too is a damsel in distress. But this is no hero's story, and there is no happy ending to this fairy tale.

Brett Favre had his chance to exit as the hero after having one of his best seasons at the age of 40. He led the Vikings to the playoffs, while throwing for 4200 yards, with 33 touchdowns, and only seven interceptions. He was on the white horse and ready to ride off into the sunset and live the rest of his days with his family on their 460 acre ranch.

He didn't get the Super Bowl victory, but aside from that it was the perfect ending to a long, and legendary career.

Unfortunately for Brett, somebody decided to make a sequel, and that is where it all went downhill. Now, Brett needs to take control of the picture, and bow out as gracefully as possible. Okay, graceful isn't possible anymore. Brett needs to shut up and hide before this western turns into a horror film.

In Brett Favre's magical 2009 he was able to get two wins against his division rival, Green Bay Packers–the same team that he will forever be linked to. Those wins had to feel good because he felt slighted by the Packers management for choosing the younger Aaron Rodgers over him.

He got to go home and prove to his old fans, his new fans, and more importantly himself, that he was the better player, and the Packers were worse off because he was no longer their leader.

Flash forward to this year, and Brett returns home to throw three interceptions, and virtually lose the game basically by himself. The Vikings had the lead, until Brett threw two interceptions in the third quarter, with one being returned for a touchdown.

Despite the fact that Brett had left the Packers over three seasons ago, he was still throwing touchdowns for the Packers, only this time it was to the defense.

Brett Favre's Body Is Breaking Down

Brett Favre is old. He is 41 and played in 292 consecutive games. That is an amazing feat, but it also has taken its toll. For a quarterback to sit back and take sacks, knockdowns, and all of the hits associated with football for 292 games, is absolutely amazing. But come on, it can't go on forever. At some point your body breaks down.

Last season should be remembered not only for the stats Brett was able to put up, but also for his ability to play healthy for the entire season.

This season, all that wear and tear is visible. He had ankle surgery before the season, he had some arm injury last week, and then this week his ankle started to give him problems again. The only surprise here is that Brett has continued to show up and play in each and every game.

His body is old, and as long as he plays there will be some ailment that continues to impede his ability to play at his highest level.

Brett Favre Never Wanted To Play in The First Place

Brett Favre never seemed interested in playing this season. For the past few seasons, we all asked the question, "Is Brett Favre coming back?" Every season, when the preseason rolled around, Brett would be out throwing balls to the players at the local high school in Hattiesburg, MS. He would be coy with his answers about returning, but in reality, you knew he'd come back.

This season was different. He never really seemed like he wanted to come back. There were always lingering questions about his ankle, his shoulder and his desire to play again. As the minicamp turned into preseason games, Brett still didn't commit.

At this point it looked and sounded like he was really ready to retire. It wasn't until his teammates flew down and basically begged him to play. He couldn't tell them no, hopped on the plane, and was back in a uniform, all within two days.

This didn't feel right. It felt forced. He was going through the motions. Did he ever convince himself that this was the right move? I don't think so.

Brett Favre's Is Breaking Down Mentally

The Vikings record is 2-4, and it looks like they will struggle to even have a chance at making the playoffs. Brett Favre has to answer questions about their poor record.

Brett Favre is continually injured, and has to nurse himself into playing shape each and every week. He has to answer questions about his health and ability to perform. He has to question himself to see if he is capable of performing.

Brett Favre has just been thrown under the media bus by some anonymous person with very incriminating evidence. Not legally incriminating but morally, and in the eyes of his fans, extremely incriminating. He has to answer questions from the NFL, and he has to answer questions from the media about his off the field antics. But more importantly, don't you think he has to answer questions from his wife and family?

For an old guy struggling to lead a team, and struggling to stay healthy, there is nothing worse than having to deal with an off the field issue as well.

The Vikings May Be Better Off Without Favre

The Vikings are struggling so far this year, and it's obvious that Brad Childress and Brett Favre are not the best of friends. As long as Childress is running the team, and Favre the offense, there will continually be a rift between the two and between the players, depending on whose side they are on.

If the Vikings chances of reaching the postseason are already slipping away, maybe it's time for a change. Whenever a quarterback is changed, there is a new energy on a team. Tavaris Jackson brings a lot of energy, and the desire to prove himself capable. That may be just what the team needs to get out of a slump. It worked with Vince Young and the Titans last year after an 0-6 start. The Vikings are two games better, and at the exact same point in the season.

A change in quarterback may spur a change in the locker room, which may be all the Vikings need to start a run in the woeful NFC. Let's be honest, as long as Favre is in the locker room, he will be the main focus on the team. The team is very good though, and Favre has been more of a detractor than an addition so far. Maybe now is the time for Childress and Favre to put their troubles aside, and let the Vikings move on with their season.

Brett Favre May Be Suspended By The NFL

For a guy who has played in 292 consecutive games, there is nothing more demeaning than having that streak ended because of a desperate text message you sent to some woman (who is not your wife) trying to get her to hang out with you, despite the fact that she obviously isn't interested. Brett Favre looks like a fool in this matter, and that is the simple truth.

Think about this, when Brett Favre's streak began, many moons ago, text messaging didn't even exist. And now that streak might end because of it.

I know he hasn't done anything criminal, but Roger Goodell likes to make examples of people. The fact that Ben Roethlisburger already sullied the reputation of NFL quarterbacks, Brett Favre is probably not going to get a free pass on this.

He was wrong, we all know it, but wouldn't it be the saddest thing ever if a nearly untouchable record had to end in this manner?

There is only one way to ensure it doesn't.

Brett Favre Needs To Retire Now

One of the best competitors in the history of sport, one of the best football players ever to suit up, and undoubtedly one of the top ten players to ever play the position of quarterback, Brett Favre deserves respect and admiration for everything he has done on the field.

True he's had his up and down moments, setting the record books not only for yards and touchdowns, but also interceptions, but nobody could ever deny the fact that the man was a leader, and the man brought his all, each and every week.

He will be enshrined in Canton in five years, and he will be remembered as the 'gunslinger' with one of the strongest arms ever, and an ability to create magic out of scraps.

The problem is, that we are not remembering Brett Favre as anything right now, because he continues to dominate the headlines for all of his current and recent mistakes on and off the field.

Brett's time to ride off into the glorious sunset came and went when those Vikings showed up in Hattiesburg in August of this year. The fairy tale ending no longer an option. This is real life. His age and injuries caught up with him.

The dream season that he and the Vikings shared was not a precursor to greater things, but a brief flash in the pan that was awarded to one of our heroes. The only problem is our hero was too easily convinced. He had no conviction. The hero was not happy with his white horse. He wanted more, just like we all do. He is only human, and this is no Hollywood ending. The only thing left to do now is to bow out and go home, and pretend that it never even happened.
