Brett Favre Reaches Another Milestone In Loss To New York Jets

Ray TannockOct 12, 2010

Brett Favre’s illustrious career reached another pinnacle of achievement in last night’s loss to the New York Jets when he threw his 500th career touchdown.

Farve also surpassed 70,000 career passing yards, but many Vikings fans are now wondering if the ageless wonder is facing a geriatric dilemma at the ripe old age of 41.

Signs of the ankle injury—sustained last year—reared its ugly head early in the season, layers of rust have yet to be shaken, and the wonder of a new scandal in Minnesota have all but hampered and rattled one of the all-time greats in football history.

But amidst the media gunk, rusty play, and surmounting questions rising up against Favre, there was plenty of upside and life to be seen in Monday night’s competition.

It wasn’t until the third quarter that the passing game really came alive, with Randy Moss showing his immediate integration into the offense, and Percy Harvin’s relegation back to his natural role as a slot receiver.

The issue was, it was a little too late in this particular game.

Now, sitting at the kids table with the Detroit Lions at 1-3, the Vikings are in must win mode from here on out if they are to even have another shot at the postseason.

But all good things come in time.

Moss had very little time to prepare, but still shined through. Percy Harvin showed he is back in the mix and ready to help out, and the Vikings also gave the much deserved ax to underachieving WR Bernard Berrian.

In addition to that, the ground game is rock solid, and the defense—aside from last night’s performance—is still a top five squad.

There is just one glaring issue left to deal with and that is who will fill in as the prototypical WR3 and who will become the next Chester Taylor; a role that is absolutely necessary.

When Taylor was a Viking, the beefy RB lifted a lot of third down pressure off of the Vikings offense by catching a ton of passes out of the backfield as well as grabbing those every so important tough one yard gains, and was basically that offensive X-factor that the Vikings really don’t have at the moment.

The WR3 spot has yet to be claimed by a squad of players who only have to step up and grab the reigns.

The WR3 spot is crucial to situational play in a Vikings offensive scheme that can go deep, but utilizing the deep threat goes a lot easier if there is a true number three set of hands.

It also bodes well for the run game set up.

Moving forward, the Vikings will face the Cowboys before a showdown with the Packers on Sunday Night, and if they can put the last two puzzle pieces together for wins, the Vikings will be enjoying a reversal of fortunes, as well as, an elevated status to .500 (3-3) which is more than enough to consider themselves back in the running.

Toby Gerhart and Greg Lewis, I’m looking your way!
