NFL Scores Week 5: Where Vegas Got It Wrong, and Why
Week Five of NFL football is behind us, chock full of upsets and plenty of teams who are certainly upset for their showings on Sunday.
In fact, of the 13 games, nine teams who were considered the underdog came out victorious.
Here's a look at the unsuccessful betting lines and a few notes about why they were wrong:
Jacksonville Jaguars at Buffalo Bills
1 of 9
Vegas prediction: Buffalo Bills over Jacksonville Jaguars (spread: -2.5)
Real Life: Jaguars won 36-26
Why the Bills Lost
The winless Bills are among the worst, if not the worst, team in the NFL. They managed to build up to an early 10-0 lead, but their defense let up, allowing Jaguars quarterback David Garrard to connect consecutive touchdown drives in the span of two minutes to take the lead.
The Bills offense couldn't get the job done. They could not cash in on two fourth-down chances in the fourth quarter.
Why the Jaguars Won
A slow start triggered a very spirited comeback that involved no panic. The Jaguars were patient, not taking the game's lead until the third period. Up until that point, the defense was able to hold the Bills from scoring any further until the Jaguars pulled away on three consecutive field goals.
Luck was also on the Jaguars' side. Garrard managed to let go of an interception and fumble to finish the game strong.
They also managed to successfully take advantage of a frustrated team who, at the time was 0-4. Staging a late comeback mentally shut down the Bills and prevented any hope for their team.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Cincinnati Bengals
2 of 9
Vegas prediction: Cincinnati Bengals over Tampa Bay Buccaneers (spread: -6.5)
Real Life: Bucs won 24-21
Why the Bengals Lost
The Bengals had the lead in the bag, but a late field goal took it away.
Their passing offense was terrible and Carson Palmer threw three interceptions, one of them coming in the final minute of the game. Palmer threw to Chad Ochcocinco who let the ball slip between his fingers and it was returned by Sabby Piscitelli to the 34-yard line with 14 seconds to go.
The Bengals couldn't finish off the game when given the opportunity and they had to pay with a loss.
Why the Bucs Won
The Bucs are the definition of playing till the clock strikes zero.
After an embarrassing season that saw only three games under the win column, the Bucs fought tooth and nail to bring home their third victory in four games. Josh Freeman threw a perfect pass to Micheal Spurlock at the 13-yard line who fell out of bounds, keeping the tips of his toes in bounds.
The pass stood completed after being under review, giving the Bucs a chance to win with a field goal. With one second left, it was good.
Chicago Bears at Carolina Panthers
3 of 9
Vegas prediction: Carolina Panthers over Chicago Bears (spread: -3)
Real Life: Bears won 23-6
Why the Panthers Lost
They couldn't get their offense going.
If the other team throws you four interceptions, you have to make use of them. The Panthers did not.
Why the Bears Won
Ridiculous luck.
As mentioned above, the Bears' quarterback Todd Collins, in place of starter Jay Cutler, threw four interceptions before he was sidelined. Lucky for the Bears, Collins' poor showing didn't matter.
The rushing game was good with Matt Forte reaching 100 yards before the first quarter was over.
Green Bay Packers at Washington Redskins
4 of 9
Vegas prediction: Green Bay Packers over Washington Redskins (spread: -3)
Real Life: Skins won 16-13
Why the Packers Lost
Anything can happen in overtime. Unfortunately for the Packers, it wasn't in their favor.
With a second left in the fourth quarter, game tied at 13, Packers kicker Mason Crosby attempted a 53-yard kick that hit the left upright, sending the game into overtime. In overtime, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw an interception, picked off by LaRon Landry and carried until he was tackled in perfect field goal position.
Maybe if the Packers had a healthier lineup, this game wouldn't have gone into overtime in the first place.
Why the Redskins Won
They came back from a 13-3 deficit to even the game up.
Regardless of what happened in regulation, the Skins were sharp when they needed to be. An interception pass by Landry gave Graham Gano the opportunity to seal the game with a 33-yard field goal which he was able to do.
New York Giants at Houston Texans
5 of 9
Vegas prediction: Houston Texans over New York Giants (spread: -3)
Real Life: Giants won 34-10
Why the Texans Lost
The Texans didn't stand a chance once the Giants were able to tap into some offense along with their strong defense.
Add in some undisciplined play that prevented an offense from gearing up, and it's going to be a long game.
Why the Giants Won
Eli Manning.
He threw for 297, including three touchdowns. What a night.
New Orleans Saints at Arizona Cardinals
6 of 9
Vegas prediction: New Orleans Saints over Arizona Cardinals (spread: -7)
Real Life: Cardinals won 30-20
Why the Saints Lost
The Saints made too many unforgivable mistakes. Interceptions, fumbles for a total of four turnovers.
In the end, turnovers were the name of the game because the Saints out-gained the Cardinals 373-194, but were still unable to win.
Why the Cardinals Won
Max Hall was undrafted but played an amazing first NFL game thanks to strong defense that was surely the reason they won the game.
The defense was not only strong defensively, but forced three turnovers on Drew Brees' hand.
San Diego Chargers at Oakland Raiders
7 of 9
Vegas prediction: San Diego Chargers over Oakland Raiders (spread: -7)
Real Life: Raiders won 35-27
Why the Chargers Lost
The Chargers lost three fumbles in Raiders territory, making for too many missed opportunities.
Why the Raiders Won
The Raiders got nine points off of a pair of blocked punts. Definitely a good way to use any kind of bounces to your advantage. Those nine points made a huge difference in the score, certainly the difference between the loss or win.
The blitz looked to work well too.
Most importantly. Michael Huff knocked the ball out of Phillip Rivers' hands and it was subsequently picked up by Tyvon Branch who ran the ball for a 64-yard touchdown that would win the game.
Tennessee Titans at Dallas Cowboys
8 of 9
Vegas prediction: Dallas Cowboys over Tennessee Titans (spread: -7)
Real Life: Titans won 34-27
Why the Cowboys Lost
Call me superstitious, I don't think the football gods are huge fans of celebration. After Marc Colombo took a penalty for excessive celebration and the Cowboys made their field goal, the Cowboys' special teams seemed to be sleeping when Titans' Marc Mariani made a long run after the reception.
Chris Johnson easily made the one-yard touchdown.
Why the Titans Won
Johnson was definitely a star, running a total of 131 yards. Vince Young threw two two touchdown passes and the defense teamed up for six sacks and three interceptions.
An overall solid game.
Philadelphia Eagles at San Francisco 49ers
9 of 9
Vegas prediction: San Francisco 49ers over Philadelphia Eagles (spread: -3.5)
Real Life: Eagles won 27-24
Why the 49ers Lost
In the fourth quarter, Alex Smith fell out of the pocket and was sacked. Unfortunately, he gave up the football to Quintin Mikell who returned it for a touchdown.
They staged a comeback, but it wasn't enough to make up for the major gaffe. They remain winless.
Why the Eagles Won
The Eagles took advantage of a frustrated 49ers team. They made sure that their three turnovers didn't hurt them in the end.
Props to LeSean McCoy who rushed for 92 yards and a score with broken ribs.
