NFL Rumors: Head Coach Mike Singletary of San Francisco 49ers Safe for Now

This just in:

Jed York claims the 49ers will make a historic run and capture the NFC West division.

"We're going to win the division," York predicted Monday morning in a text to ESPN.

York is also claiming that head coach Mike Singletary's job is not in jeopardy.

"His job is not on the line," York told NBC Bay Area in an interview that aired before the Niners' loss to the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday night. "When you're losing football games or when you're winning football games, it doesn't matter what happened before. It's what's coming up."

No answer to Mike Singletary's insightful and motivational quote to NBC's Andrea Kremer was found in last night's game either. When Kremer asked Singletary what he said to his troops to prepare them before the game, he simply replied, "When?"

No team has ever made the playoffs starting a season at 0-5. However in the mild, mild West, anything is possible this year.

The Arizona Cardinals, with the aid of three Drew Brees interceptions, managed to knock off the defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints yesterday (30-20) and lead the division at 3-2.

The Saint Louis Rams were pounded by the Detroit Lions, 44-6, and lost starting wide receiver Mark Clayton for the season with a torn patellar tendon in his knee.

The Seattle Seahawks had a bye, and their record is currently 2-2.

It is not inconceivable that the 49ers could actually still win the division. Their schedule includes next week's game against the Oakland Raiders at home and then games against the Carolina Panthers and the Denver Broncos before their bye week. They will then face division opponents in five of their last eight games.

However, if the 49ers do expect to make a historic run, they will have to clean up the mistakes.

The team committed five turnovers last night, three by quarterback Alex Smith and two costly Frank Gore fumbles.

At one point early in the fourth quarter, Smith was heavily pressured by Eagles rookie DE Brandon Graham (a player I had the 49ers selecting in the first round in my mock draft earlier this year). Graham sacked Smith and forced a fumble, which was scooped up and run back by Eagles safety Quintin Mikell for a 52-yard touchdown.

Smith has been an easy target for the 49ers' lack of success this year. His inconsistent play and propensity for turning the ball over caused the crowd to turn on him last night. Smith was rained on with boos, and chants of "We want Carr" echoed through the stadium.

After a discussion with Singletary on the sideline, Smith remained in the game and rallied the 49ers to within three points of the Eagles, 27-24.

However, the Eagles salted the game away when they picked off Smith for the second time. I really have to blame the offensive line for this one though; Smith's pass was off target because he was hit right as he released the ball.

Smith ended the night 25-of-39 for 309 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions.

The loss ruined a bit of a coming-out party for wide receiver Michael Crabtree and tight end Vernon Davis—both have been relatively quiet leading up to this game.

Crabtree ended the night with nine receptions for 105 yards and a touchdown. Davis had five grabs for 104 yards and a touchdown.
