NFL: Top Seven Mind Boggling Facts Through Four Games of the 2010 Season
As we the fans get set to embark on the second semester of the 2010 season, there have been some things that have occurred that simply jar my brain, leave me scratching my head if you will, and I felt that maybe putting it down in plain view might help—here's to hoping!
No need to delve into a drawn out introduction here as it's pretty clear what this slide-show will be about so with that lets get to it.
The NFLs Top 7 Mind Boggling Facts through the 2010 season
Dallas Cowboys Move Up Two Spots In the Power Rankings?
1 of 8
You read that correctly, the Dallas Cowboys somehow moved up two spots in the power rankings this week.
Why does this confuse me you ask?
It's very simple you see, the Cowboys are in dead last in the wide open NFC East with a record of 1-2. I know, before you say it I know, they just had a bye week right—EXACTLY!
How is it that a team can be have played the least amount of wins in a division, losing to a division rival, and be coming off a bye week move in any direction, up or down?
They put up on average 18 points per game which is tied with the New York Giants and just behind the Washington Redskins who have notched 18.2 up to this point.
Tony Romo does move the ball well I'll give him that as he and the Cowboys average just under 400 yards a game (391.7) which is fifth in the league but one could argue that with a weak run game (26th in the league) that passing stat could be negated.
So I'm still left perplexed about how this all came about and would greatly appreciate it if anyone could explain it to me!
The Kansas City Chiefs Are 3-0
2 of 8
This is not a cheap shot at the Kansas City Chiefs or their fanbase, rather more of a kudos to them for finally having a winning record through the first semester of football.
After looking like they would have yet again another losing season based on a 1-3 preseason, the Chiefs have done a u-turn and came out ready to bulldoze their competition—literally!
Kansas City has taken the run first pass second method and are plowing a path with running backs Jamaal Charles (3rd year), who is sporting a 7.0 yard per carry average on 34 attempts, and veteran Thomas Jones have decided to take over at Arrowhead Stadium.
Charles and Jones have a combined 455 yards on 86 rushing attempts (5.3 average) versus a passing game QB Matt Cassell who has thrown just 77 times, completing 42 of those passes.
However we all know the saying, a great defense is what wins games right, well the Chiefs rank second in the league with points allowed per game at 12.7, allowing an average of just 75 yards which NFL.com has ranked fifth in the league.
With a running attack that is easily getting the job done and a defense that isn't giving away anything, the Chiefs long-full woes could be coming to a rest!
What Are the Patriots Thinking
3 of 8
This one right here, the latest and greatest story line of the week just makes me nuts. How could the New England Patriots trade away their BIGGEST receiving threat Randy Moss—pay the man or have the Patriots completely forgotten what Moss is capable of?
It wasn't that long ago that the Tom Brady/Randy Moss duo was unstoppable setting nearly every NFL passing record known to man. You know he is your most feared threat on the team and you just trade him.
What makes even less sense is the Pats trade Moss for a third round pick, now that's just slapping him in the face if you ask me.
For Minnesota Vikings and Brett Favre, well what an early Halloween treat to get Randy Moss back. I sure hope some of those Vikings fans have his old jersey (yeah right) because he just made the Vikes one serious contender.
The Patriots aren't completely down and out without Moss though. Wes Welker is an absolute beast (for a little guy) and Aaron Hernandez leads the team in receiving yards with 240, so they have options.
Moss had one phenomenal season with the Patriots and has since been relatively quiet.
Jets CB Darrell Revis called him out saying he was going to shut Moss down all game and he did just that—again!
Maybe trading him wasn't that bad of an idea after all.
San Francisco 49ers Are Winless—Really?
4 of 8
How is it a team can go from a perfect preseason to an imperfect season through the same length of time? I mean to go from a poor preseason into a great start to the regular season I can understand, going back to the Chiefs, but from perfect to imperfect—Mike Singletary has to be going nuts right now.
They will host the Philadelphia Eagles this Sunday and with the way the Eagles have playing as of late, the 49ers have a great opportunity to record their first win of the season.
They have two threats in RB Frank Gore and TE Vernon Davis who will have an opportunity to make a statement against an Eagles defense who traditionally get beat by TEs, and have been getting leveled by RBs as of late.
The reason I say they will have an opportunity—amazingly the 49ers are ranked 28th in the league only gaining an average of 78.8 yards per game.
QB Alex Smith also has WRs Michael Crabtree (2nd year) and Josh Morgan (3rd year) who form an average duo (ranked 18th). Both players have big play potential with their size and speed but it is Alex Smith himself who needs some work—and coach Singletary believes in his guy.
It will be a good match-up on Sunday but if the Niners do happen to lose this game, desperation mode will be in full effect!
Batman and Robin Are Only Average—Even When Paired Up

With all the hype of WRs Terrell Owens and Chad Ocho Cinco being paired up with each other, and QB Carson Palmer being an solid quarterback in the NFL, one would have to believe that this offense would be more explosive than any other.
Unfortunately for Bengals fans the team is, like many other teams in the league, at .500 at this point in the season.
Statistically this team should be no worse than 3-1 as they rank highly in almost every category, on both sides of the football.
The two teams they've lost to are the New England Patriots, that's understandable, and the second came this past Sunday to the Cleveland Browns and that one does take me by surprise.
In a game where one player (T.O.) put up 222 total yards of offense himself, HIMSELF, there should be no reason why they lose that game—none. One man was doing all the work in that game while it appeared as if everyone else sat back and watched the show.
Bengals, when T.O. says "git yo popcorn ready", he's actually talking to the fans, not the players!
This coming Sunday is a very important home game for the Bengals as they host a 2-1 Tampa Bay Buccaneers who are very eager to advance to 3-1, and has the rest to do so coming off of a bye week.
This is another game to keep an eye on!
Philadelphia Eagles Are Floating in a Captainless Ship
6 of 8
What a crazy turn of events the Philadelphia Eagles have essentially become. To trade away a fundamental member of the franchise in Donovan McNabb to a division rival, solely on the belief that QB Kevin Kolb looked more than capable to do the job.
Then week one comes vs the Packers and LB Clay Matthews simply man handles the new "heir" in Philly leaving him concussed and confused.
Insert QB Michael Vick who, according to head coach Andy Reid at the time, was possibly the hottest QB in the league and names him the starter of the Eagles for the remainder of the 2010 season. Things certainly were looking good for Vick.
He led the Eagles to a "Vick-tory" over the Detroit Lions and then made the Jacksonville Jaguars look foolish the following week.
It appeared if Michael Vick had won the hearts of Philly fans and it was smooth sailing heading into the Donovan McNabb home coming challenge he had staring him right in the face.
From the start, VICK looked good. I capitalize his name because he's really the only one that showed up for that game if you ask me other than RB LeSean McCoy, but he didn't start making moves until later in the game.
Then, after a 35 yard scramble reaching the Redskins one yard line, Vick took a hit from two defenders that left him hurt and eventually kept him from the game. The results were in and he had cartilage damage in his ribs.
Insert Kevin Kolb!
Now he has a second chance to redeem his name in the NFL world but if you look at this a bit closer you'll see that is isn't just Kolb that needs improvement—the entire offensive line does as well.
Lets hope this week he gets a little more protection from the men in the trenches. If he does get time and still sucks then there's your answer. However if he gets the time he needs (3-5 seconds) and plays well, the controversy just might start all over!
NFL and Owners Still Not Agreeing to Terms on Collective Bargaining Agreement
7 of 8
This is something that needs to get resolved pronto. If there isn't any NFL football for the 2011 season I don't know what I'm going to do.
I, like millions of other fans across the globe, feel sickened when our teams' season is over and are forced to wait eight months or longer for another season to begin. So to think that an entire season could go to waste because some things can't be agreed on—ugh!
Lets face it, the NFL is a business and is treated like one so if the big wigs of this league and team owners can't come to terms, it isn't hurting anyone but themselves in the long run potentially losing millions upon millions of revenue.
Also you have to factor in all the television networks that the NFL has contracts with. If there aren't any games to televise well then I suppose what—you breach the contract?
I have full faith that none of this is going to happen, neither side wants it to come to that, but the fact that it has gone this far is truly mind boggling.
