2010 Fantasy Football Start and Sit, Week 5

Ryan LesterOct 7, 2010

Here’s some sit and start advice as you set your lineups for Week 5 of the NFL season.

Quarterbacks

Start
:

Sam Bradford
, St. Louis Rams
Bradford has six TDs in four games and is going up against the Lions, who are 26th with 241 passing yards allowed and tied for 25th with 8 passing TDs allowed. He set a career high with 289 passing yards against Seattle and seems to get more comfortable each week.

Sit:

Donovan McNabb
, Washington Redskins
McNabb is due for a letdown after the emotional victory over Philadelphia. Aside from his one monster game against Houston, McNabb is averaging 177.3 passing yards. Going up against a Green Bay team that is seventh in the league with 185 passing yards allowed per game and tied for eighth with four passing TDs allowed, doesn’t help matters.

Running Backs

Start
:

Peyton Hillis, Cleveland Browns
If you didn’t get the memo, Hillis is for real. He runs hard and has a nose for the goal line. He can even catch the ball out of the backfield. Atlanta is a tough matchup, but Hillis has earned every week starter status until he proves otherwise.

Jamaal Charles, Kansas City Chiefs
I know that Thomas Jones is the starter and getting more carries, but Charles remains the more explosive back. They both can be used against the Colts 29th ranked run defense.
.
Sit:

Shonn Greene, New York Jets
Greene showed signs of life last week rumbling for 117 yards against Buffalo. Despite his outburst he is still playing second fiddle to LT. The Jets are facing the Vikings this week, who are ninth in the league in rushing yards allowed per game. Plus, they have only allowed one rushing touchdown.

Wide Receivers

Start
:

Mark Clayton, St. Louis Rams
Clayton had his worst fantasy game of the season against Seattle, but still managed 72 yards. He’s a tremendous play against a Detroit pass defense that has yielded 8 passing TDs and is allowing 241 yards per game through the air.

Steve Smith, New York Giants
Smith has three duds and one big game this year. He’s yet to reach the end zone. While Brian Cushing’s return should help Houston’s league worst pass defense, it should actually play into Smith’s hands as Eli will be forced to get rid of the ball sooner.

Sit
:

Bronco Receivers
It’s not that I think the Broncos won’t be able to move the chains through the air, but they have four capable receivers (Brandon Lloyd, Jabar Gaffney, Eddie Royal, and Demaryius Thomas). That’s a lot of mouths to feed, especially when you’re facing the league’s stingiest pass defense.

Tight Ends

Start
:

Brandon Pettigrew, Detroit Lions
Pettigrew is averaging seven catches in his last three games. He should be a big factor in what is looking like a shootout.

Sit:

Visanthe Shiancoe, Minnesota Vikings
Brett Favre is going to want to use his new toy against the Jets. Shiancoe should lose red zone targets to Moss and Adrian Peterson. Percy Harvin could move over to the slot, which would take away some of his looks between the 20s.

Kickers

Start
:

Matt Bryant, Atlanta Falcons
Bryant is tied for the league lead with 10 FGs. Atlanta should have no problem putting points on the board against Cleveland.

Sit:

Nate Kaeding, San Diego Chargers
Kaeding only has 14 FGs in his last 10 games on the road and just two in two games against Oakland last year.

Defenses

Start
:

New Orleans Saints
The Saints aggressive style forces turnovers. Max Hall is making his first start. While he couldn't be much worse than Derek Anderson, it's still a tough first start. This could get ugly.

Sit:

Tennessee Titans
The Titans defense is back, but they should take a seat this week against a Dallas team coming off a bye and playing at home.
