Miami Dolphins: Fins Fall Flat in Embarrassing Fashion To Pats on Monday Night

Zack DuarteOct 5, 2010

If I told you two days ago that the Miami Dolphins had 400 total yards against the New England Patriots, held them to 265, contained Tom Brady to a minuscule 153 yards passing and shut out Randy Moss you would probably have bet an entire paycheck on the Dolphins to win.

Good thing I didn't know this information two days ago, eh?

It used to be guys like Tom Brady, Randy Moss, and Teddy Bruschi taking down the Dolphins. Last night it was Rob Ninkovich, Patrick Chung, and BenJarvus Green-Ellis...who?

The Miami Dolphins fell flat on their face on the national spotlight for the second week in a row and ladies and gentlemen I am proclaiming it now:

The 2010 season is OVER!

After starting 2-0 for the first time since 2003 the Dolphins failed to split two games against division opponents and go 3-1 into the bye. Not only do they head into the break on a losing streak but they have two long grueling weeks to think about the pathetic performance they displayed for the nation to see Monday night.

They are 0-2 at home, 1-2 in the division and still have games left to play at the Jets and at the Patriots later on in the year.

Call me crazy for saying that the season is over but a week ago I posted an article on this very site about how the coaching staff needs to be held accountable and now what is every South Florida journalist writing today? What is every fan demanding?

The heads of the coaching staff!

On the opening drive of the game Chad Henne was 5-5 and on third-and-six at the NE 36-yard line Dan Henning called for the Wildcat play in which resulted in a two-yard loss and the Dolphins punted the ball away.

Overall Henne was decent. This was his 17th game starting so basically the start of his sophomore season. He is still having trouble checking his reads and not looking down his passes. He was intercepted three times during this game.

I blame the coaching. They are not letting Henne go. They are keeping him to the Chad Pennington school of play calling. The longer this continues the more they will damage Henne's progression as a quarterback. Henne must be freed and allowed to throw the deep ball to Brandon Marshall.

It doesn't matter if Marshall is double- or triple-covered as we saw what he can do when he caught a deep bomb last week against the Jets while being double-covered.

By the way, Marshall was targeted once during the first half. Great play calling.

The special teams allowed a kick-off for a touchdown, had a punt blocked (the fourth blocked punt in eight weeks) and a field goal that was blocked and returned to the house for a New England touchdown which all but sealed the game.

Why were the Dolphins going for a 54-yard field goal when they were trailing by 13 points inside the fourth quarter?

After last week's special teams gaffes the team cut LB Erik Walden all but proclaiming him the scapegoat on special teams. Now it's time to hold the coaching accountable.

No more excuses.

John Bonamego, the Dolphins special teams coach needs to go as he has not fixed the problem and its been going on for the entire season and preseason.

Has anyone heard from Koa Misi since he recovered a fumble two weeks ago?

Mike Nolan's blitz packages must have been left on the practice field because Brady was making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich while searching for his receivers.

The lone bright spots were Cameron Wake, who continued to show Dolphins fans why the brass had no problem releasing Joey Porter, and Vontae Davis who was covering Moss for the most part of the game. Moss did not catch a pass for the first time in 52 games.

The Dolphins have allowed a total of 52 points in the second half of the last two games. To solely blame the defense for that would be intolerable as it seems as though the Dolphins have given up more points via an interception or special teams play returned to the house than the Defense has.

To add insult to injury Rob Ninkovich, who had a sack and two of the four total interceptions, used to be on the Dolphins practice squad, joining the list of former Dolphins who have come back to burn their team with the Patriots. The list includes: Wes Welker, Larry Izzo, Sammy Morris, and Heath Evans among others.

Last week on national television, the country saw Rex Ryan pour a cooler of water on Jason Taylor, this week the country actually saw Bill Belichick smile and shake all his players' hands after beating down the Dolphins.

It doesn't get any easier for Miami after the bye. They play at Green Bay, then the Pittsburgh Steelers, at Cincinnati, and at Baltimore.

The real question is can the Dolphins lose any worse than they did last night?
