Three Reasons Why Michael Vick Is The Best Quarterback For The Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles had a tumultuous off-season and an even more controversial start to the regular season. In April, the Eagles traded franchise quarterback, Donovan McNabb to the Redskins for a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th round draft pick.
McNabb, who had quarterbacked the Eagles for eleven seasons, will lead the Redskins into Lincoln Financial Stadium this Sunday. But will McNabb be the best quarterback in the stadium?
Enter Eagles starting quarterback, Michael Vick. Since taking over for an injured Kevin Kolb in Week 1, Vick has gone 2-0 as the starting quarterback. Vick torched the Jacksonville Jaguars this past week for four total touchdowns as the Eagles won big, 28-3.
Given Vick's success with the Eagle offense, head coach Andy Reid named Vick the starting quarterback.
Here are three reasons why this was the right decision...
Reason No. 1: Experience and Poise
1 of 4
When Michael Vick steps onto a football field, he becomes the deadliest player on the field. Not only can Vick torch defenses with his strong arm, but he can run away and escape pressure.
Vick has rushed for at least 500 yards in four of five full seasons as a starting quarterback. Vick has never completed more than 56% of his passes in a season, but does he really need to when he can pick up tough yards with his legs?
Unlike other quarterbacks, opposing defenses must spend extra time game planning for Vick's explosive running style.
Can Kevin Kolb do any of this? We really don't know. It's been reported time after time that Kolb is an extremely accurate passer that is a perfect fit for the West Coast offense....BUT
Andy Reid is a desperate man and desperate times call for desperate measures. Reid knows that his job is on the line this year and he has chosen to tie his wagon to Vick.
Can you blame him?
Reason No. 2: Big Play Ability

One of the reasons why Donovan McNabb had so much success in Philly was his ability to get the ball down the field. Kevin Kolb demonstrated that he had issues with that during the pre-season. With Kolb under center, the Eagles failed to notch a passing score. We saw similar issues during Week 1 of the regular season against Green Bay. Kolb failed to deliver the big play.
However, when Michael Vick steps on the field, he is electric and capable of making the big play. Vick proved that very notion twice against the Jaguars. In the first quarter, Vick hit DeSean Jackson with a 61-yard bomb that he took in for a score. Two quarters later, Jeremy Maclin hauled in a 46-yard score.
Vick brings this type of big-play ability that the Philadelphia receivers thrive on.
Reason No. 3: Vick Has Something to Prove
3 of 4
Under most circumstances, people deserve a second chance. That doesn't mean their past actions go unnoticed. However, in the case of Michael Vick, he has earned his second chance. Most feel that Vick has repaid his debt to society and his play on the field will help him channel his emotions.
Vick has been given a second chance in life and I'm sure he'll make the most of it.
He really has nothing left to lose and those type of players are always the toughest to beat...
