WWE: Does Anyone Really Miss The Blood in a PG Wrestling World

The Doctor Chris MuellerSep 9, 2010

WWE went PG a few years back which meant scrapping all the overly sexy matches like Bra and Panties matches, as well as no longer allowing cutting. Cutting is when a wrestler uses a razor to cut themselves to appear injured from a big move or weapon attack.

Wrestlers in WWE used to slice themselves open for years in order to make it appear more hardcore and realistic. Now the WWE will stop a match if more than a busted lip is seen on screen.

When these changes first went into affect a lot of people in the IWC lambasted WWE for taking away blood in matches. The fact is WWE did this for two reasons, to protect its talent and to appeal more to families with young children.

It's no secret to anyone who has taken a marketing class that children dictate a huge amount of the spending that is done by adults each year. Whether its toys, movies, cereal, video games or wrestling merchandise, kids influence the buying patterns of their parents.

So I have to ask, now that a few years have passed, does anyone really miss the blood? I for one do not really miss it at all. I think sometimes WWE relied to much on guys being busted open to sell big moves, and now we have straight up wrestling with no razor blades.

Some people complain that matches get stopped so cuts can be closed, but I can only think of a few matches in the last year that have been stopped due to blood, certainly not enough to make me think twice about it.

I like some things about the PG era like keeping wrestlers safe, but I have to admit that I do miss the more provocative storylines sometimes.

Vince McMahon has done one thing better than any other wrestling promoter and that is adapt to what the audience wants. Some may disagree with that statement but if it wasn't true then WWE would not be the only big dog in the game would they?

Vince knew that during the 80's over the top characters would sell so he brought in the likes of Honky Tonk man, Roddy Piper, Hulk hogan and Sgt Slaughter. In the nineties he knew that fans wanted more aggression.

During the Attitude era Vince recognized that controversy and sex would sell to a major crowd, and in the current era Vince knows that kids are the big market and he is capitalizing on that.

Adults may think Cena is boring but kids buy his merch like its going out of style. These same reasons are why every DX reunion after their initial run has gotten tamer.

Overall I would say that a lot of fans would probably say they didn't care about the blood because that's not why they watch, they watch to be entertained and that can be achieved without excessive blood loss to the talent.

So again, I ask, who misses the blood?
