NFL Cuts 2010: Cleveland Browns Final 53-Man Roster
Eric Mangini and the Cleveland Browns released their final 53 man roster to the public at 8:00 PM last evening. I've already seen several articles explaining who's been cut, and opinions of why and why some of them may have been mistakes. But I have yet to read an article listing the actual roster.
So here it is. I've listed the players by position, along with their jersey numbers, so that you can know who to be looking for when they're on the field.
Keep in mind that it's highly unlikely that the front office is done shuffling around. We may yet pick up some players from the waiver wire, or even maybe make a trade or two. But for right now, this is our team, and I will try to refrain from interjecting my own opinions of who should, and should not have made it.
Quarterbacks
1 of 11
In what may have been the biggest surprise of the final roster(note the sarcasm), Colt McCoy made the roster ahead of Mangini "pet" Brett Ratliff. I guess Tony Grossi can't get them all right. Of course, it'd be nice if he could get something right every once in a while. Here are the quarterbacks for your 2010 Cleveland Browns:
- No.17 Jake Delhomme
- No.6 Seneca Wallace
- No.12 Colt McCoy
Running Backs
2 of 11
The season ending injury took most of the suspense out of this one. There was a lot of talk as to whether the Browns would keep either James Davis or Chris Jennings. Most people thought that Jennings was done, but weren't sure whether Davis would make it or not.
Once Hardesty went down, and Davis shown in his stead, Davis became a lock to make the team. The only question that remained was whether Chris Jennings would make it with Hardesty being out for the year. Well, he didn't. So here is our stable of backs for this season.
- No.35 Jerome Harrison
- No.28 James Davis
- No.40 Peyton Hillis
- No.47 Lawrence Vickers(Fullback)
Wide Receivers
3 of 11
There really weren't any surprises with the receivers. Some thought we may keep one more, maybe Jake Allen or veteran journeyman Bobby Engram, but they stuck to our basic core of very young players.
The group as a whole showed a very marked improvement throughout the entire offseason, so that probably helped to keep the front office from feeling like they had to bring someone else in. So here they are.
- No.11 Mohamed Massaquoi
- No.80 Brian Robiskie
- No.83 Chansi Stuckey
- No.16 Josh Cribbs
- No.18 Carlton Mitchell
Tight Ends
4 of 11
A lot has been made of the improvements made to the secondary, but it is my opinion that tight end is the most improved position for the Browns this season. It seemed as though it was going to come down to Alex Smith or Robert Royal, as far as who would be kept on for the third tight end spot. But surprise, it was both of them. So here are our four tight ends for the season.
- No.82 Ben Watson
- No.89 Evan Moore
- No.84 Robert Royal
- No.81 Alex Smith
Offensive Line
5 of 11
The offensive line is widely accepted as the true strength of the team. But depth appears to be an issue. Somewhat surprisingly, the Browns only kept eight men for the offensive trenches. I wouldn't be surprised if this is an area where they may bring in someone off of another teams waiver wire. But for right now, here's our o-line.
- No.73 LT Joe Thomas
- No.65 LG Eric Steinbach
- No.55 C Alex Mack
- No.66 RG Shaun Lauvao
- No.79 RT Tony Pashos
- No.77 Floyd "Porkchop" Womack
- No.78 John St Clair
- No.68 Billy Yates
Defensive Line
6 of 11
Defensive line depth is another area of concern. The Browns have struggled throughout the preseason to generate a pass rush. The good news is that big Shaun Rogers will not start the season on the PUP(physically unable to perform) list, and is expected to be ready for week 1 against Tampa Bay. This may also be another area where the Browns could look to pick up someone cut from another team. I hear the Bengals have more defensive lineman than they know what to do with. Also surprisingly, they cut draft pick Clifton Geathers. Maybe the fight he got into in training camp had something to do with it. Who knows. But here's who we kept.
- No.92 Shaun Rogers
- No.71 Ahtyba Rubin
- No.98 Robaire Smith
- No.90 Kenyon Coleman
- No.91 Brian Schafering
- No.67 Derreck Robinson
Linebackers
7 of 11
This is definitely the biggest surprise by far on the roster. It's not who they did or didn't cut. It's that they didn't cut anybody. They kept twelve, let me repeat that, twelve linebackers on the roster. I wonder what wild evil genius plan is being hatched by Mangini, Ryan, Holmgren, and Heckert. I must say that this gives me the feeling that they may be trying to trade D'Qwell Jackson again. I thought at least 3, if not 4 of these guys would be gone, but here they are.
- No.99 Scott Fujita
- No.52 D'Qwell Jackson
- No.58 Marcus Benard
- No.53 Matt Roth
- No.51 Chris Gocong
- No.56 Kaluka Maiva
- No.96 David Bowens
- No.50 Eric Barton
- No.54 Blake Costanzo
- No.93 Jason Trusnik
- No.57 David Veikune
- No.59 Titus Brown
Secondary
8 of 11
As many linebackers as the Browns kept, the cut just about as many cornerbacks. I was pretty sure that either Brandon McDonald, Coye Francies, or rookie Chris Chancellor would make it. Maybe even two of them, but they all had a meeting with the "Turk". Also surprisingly, rookie draft pick Larry Asante, who everyone seemed to be very high on, was cut as well. I half expected him to be starting over Elam by mid-season. I think Mangini's love of special team standouts had a lot to do with most of these roster moves. So here is our secondary for this year.
- No.21 CB Eric Wright
- No.24 CB Sheldon Brown
- No.23 CB Joe Haden
- No.20 DB Mike Adams
- No.26 SS Abram Elam
- No.43 FS T.J. Ward
- No.41 DB Ray Ventrone
- No.27 DB Nick Sorensen
Special Teams
9 of 11
This is pretty much cut and dry and to be as expected. So there's no shockers here.
- No.4 Placekicker Phil Dawson
- No.2 Punter Reggie Hodges
- No.64 Long-snapper Ryan Pontbriand
Injured Reserve
10 of 11
The Browns begin the season with six players on the injured reserve list. The surprise here is that a couple of these players had been previously reported as having been released, but on the Browns website, they have them listed on the IR. Fortunately, the Browns didn't lose any truly intregal parts of their team to the IR this preseason. The most prominent names are of course, rookie second round draft choice Montario Hardesty, and our starting punter, Dave Zastudil. Here's the complete list.
- No.31 RB Montario Hardesty
- No.62 DL Titus Adams
- No.94 DL Kwaku Danso
- No.37 DB Chris Roberson
- No.86 WR Jonathon Haggerty
- No.15 P Dave Zastudil
Conclusion
11 of 11
So this concludes the our first offseason under president Mike Holmgren, and boy has it been an interesting one. Overall, there weren't too many shockers with final roster, but I find it hard to believe that we're gonna carry 12 linebackers. I've got to think that they have a some kind of plan. But I must say, I'm not really worried about it. For the first time in almost 20 years I can honestly say that I trust my team.
I trust Holmgren. I believe he has a plan. I trust Heckert. Both of their records speak for themselves. But surprisingly, I really trust Eric Mangini. I never liked the guy up until a couple months ago, but somethings changed.
I recently read an in-depth article on Coach Mangini by Seth Wickersham in ESPN the magazine. It really told a great story of how being on the hot seat has allowed Mangini to be more himself. He's finally coming into his own and realizing that he doesn't have to be Bill Belichick. I highly recommend this article. It's a great read.
It's a great feeling to not have to second guess my teams every move. It's nice to be able to just sit back and enjoy the show, and so I would like to say "thank you" to our front office and our coaching staff for bringing back a bit of the joy of being a Cleveland Browns fan. Go Browns!
