The Eagles recently wrapped up camp at Lehigh and will reconvene Sunday at NovaCare for three more intense weeks of work. The camp at Lehigh was run differently than it had been in the past.
This is one of the youngest teams that head coach Andy Reid has had in his tenure with the Eagles and he ran them hard at camp. The coach estimated that they ran 200 more plays then they normally run at camp. The average age of this team is twenty-four years old and they consist of thirteen drafted rookies, and a quarterback with little experience as a starter. The extra plays and contact were not without some injuries.
Among the Eagle players that won’t be in uniform are offensive lineman Todd Herremans (foot), Jamaal Jackson (knee) and Nick Cole (knee). Cornerback Asante Samuel (hamstring) and running back Mike Bell (calf) are questionable, and running back J.J. Arrington (knee) is expected to be in a Philadelphia uniform for the first time this season.
Kevin Kolb has some big shoes to fill at the helm, as he takes over for the recently departed Donovan Mcnabb.
Reid believes that Kolb is up to the challenge and has impressed up to this point. ”I think he showed that he’s very capable of doing this thing. It’s way more stress than he’s ever had on his arm or [been] asked to do from a throwing standpoint,” Reid said.
“I thought he did a very good job with that. His command and the intangible part of it, he maintained what we thought he would do, and what he did last year.” He will get his chance to shine tonight with more snaps then he saw in the first preseason game.
When they take on the Bengals on Friday night, Kolb and the first team offense will expect to play the entire first half.
It will be the Eagles defense that should get the greatest test tonight. The secondary will have the difficult task of trying to cover a quartet of talented receivers, while the front line attempts to silence a strong running attack.
The preseason game will give the Eagles a challenge as they face off against a top tier team in the NFL. Tonight the young players get the chance they have been waiting for, a chance to fly.
