Brandon Phillips and the 10 Best Bulletin Board Sports Quotes Ever
One day after his outspoken comments towards the St. Louis Cardinals started a brawl, Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips stood by his words.
"The comments I made yesterday, those are my comments. I said those things and I really mean what I said."
Rest assured, the feud between Phillips and the Cardinals is still in the early stages.
His comment that the Cardinals are "little bitches, all of them," comes in the midst of a pennant race between two teams. It also places old adversaries Tony LaRussa and Dusty Baker firmly at odds once again.
Here's a look at 10 bulletin board quotes that have coincided with rivalries throughout the sports world.
No. 10: Jose Mesa vs. Omar Vizquel
1 of 10
"Even my little boy told me to get him. If I face him 10 more times, I'll hit him 10 more times. I want to kill him"
Jose Mesa was an angry man, and a prideful man, so his response to Omar Visquel's comments came as no surprise.
Visquel's harsh words aimed at his former teammate created one of the weirdest feuds you could ever have imagined.
Mesa, who famously blew Game 7 of the World Series for the Indians against the Marlins, lived up to the promise that he would throw at Visquel whenever he faced him.
No. 9: Lane Kiffin vs. Urban Meyer
2 of 10
Before it's all over, Lane Kiffin could easily dominate the bulletin boards of nearly every major college football locker room. His feud with Urban Meyer didn't last long, but it was certainly filled with quality material.
It all started when Kiffin opened his big mouth a lied while speaking to Tennessee fans. He accused Urban Meyer of calling a recruit while the player was making his official visit to UT, in tern committing a rules violation of his own.
When the two teams met in Knoxville, the heavily favored Gators eeked out a 23-13 win. Afterwards, Meyer said, "I don't think Tennessee played to win," while adding that his team was suffering from the flu.
Kiffin appeared ready to take the high road in response, but added "next time we barely win I'll be sure to tell you that everybody was sick."
No. 8: Charles Barkley vs. Angola
3 of 10
It's about as one sided as a rivalry can get, by Charles Barkley comments regarding the rest of the world as the Dream Team rampaged through opponents created quite a stir.
As U.S. was putting the finishing touches on a 116-48 win over Angola, Barkley threw an elbow and started an altercation. After the game, he explained his actions accordingly.
"If somebody hits me, I'm going to hit him back. Even if it does look like he hasn't eaten in a couple of weeks. I thought he was going to pull a spear on me."
As history has shown, Barkley wasn't kidding about his willingness to fight anyone anywhere at anytime.
No. 7: Michael Jordan vs. Larry Miller
4 of 10
One of the memorable in-game bulletin board quotes involved a team owner and a superstar obsessed with tormenting opponents.
"Why don't you pick on somebody your own size?"
That's what Jazz own Larry Miller yelled to Michael Jordan after Jordan dunked over John Stockon.
Always hungry for motivation, Jordan depended the ball on the Bulls next possession, drove the lane, and jammed over 7-footer Mel Turpin.
He looked at Miller, shrugged, and said "Was he big enough for you?"
No. 6: Kevin Harvick vs. Carl Edwards
5 of 10
NASCAR has produced plenty of feuds and quotable material. The ongoing battle between Carl Edwards and Kevin Harvick has provided some great quotes.
After Edwards allegedly stormed into Harvick's garage following a wreck and pushed him onto the hood of his car, Harvick voiced his displeasure in the media.
Harvick blamed the wreck on Edwards, who tapped Greg Biffle from behind starting a massive crash at Lowe's Motor Speedway.
"I know that his fans won't be very proud of him sitting back there and riding around like a pansy. If he had been racing all day, maybe he would have known how long the front of his car was."
No. 5: Mike Piazza vs. Roger Clemens
6 of 10
The famous bat-tossing incident between Clemens and Piazza produced a flurry of great quotes and sparked a great deal of controversy that continued after the Subway Series had concluded.
Since Clemens had beaned Pizza earlier in the year after the slugger took him deep for a grand slam, the Mets didn't buy what Clemens called "an emotional reaction."
Respected Mets relief pitcher John Franco said, "I think he knew what he was doing all along, but I'm sure his going to come up with an excuse, just like last time. We lost respect for him."
The Yankees took the 2000 World Series 4-1, but the feud between Piazza and Clemens wasn't over.
No. 4: Steve Avery Vs. Dion Phaneuf and Elisha Cuthbert
7 of 10
Steve Avery has never failed to irritate his opponents, include Dion Phaneuf, who was dating his former girlfriend Elisha Cuthbert when the Stars visited the Flames in December of 2008.
"I am really happy to be back in Calgary, I love Canada. I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don't know. That's about it."
The NHL wasn't laughing, and suspended Avery immediately, most likely in response to the "sloppy seconds" line. The Stars beat the Flames later that night and reacted angrily to their teammates' comments.
No. 3: Pedro Martinez vs. Don Zimmer
8 of 10
The rivalry between Pedro Martinez and Don Zimmer is still alive and well even as both men have long since moved on from their days with the Yankees and Red Sox.
In 2009, Martinez apologized for throwing Zimmer to the ground to the famous brawl between the two teams. Did Zimmer accept? Not a chance.
"Pedro is full of crap. It's what, six years later? If Pedro wants to be a big man, I don't care what he says."
Who knows, maybe the Rays will sign Pedro at some point down the road. There's always a chance the two enemies could be reunited.
No. 2: Shaq vs. Sacramento Kings
9 of 10
Shaq's famous quote, "We're not worried about the Sacramento Queens," made the Sacramento Kings try even harder to dethrone the mighty Lakers.
It never happened.
Shaq's dislike for the city of Sacramento was a bit puzzling, but he always managed to dominate despite facing hostile crowds and the angry clangs of cowbells.
No. 1: Muhammed Ali vs. Joe Frazier
10 of 10
"This might shock at amaze you, but I'm gonna retire Joe Frazier."
And Ali almost did.
The comments leading up to what is widely regarded as the best boxing match in history were very prophetic, as both fighters spent time in the hospital after the fight and Frazier contemplated retirement.
The rematch in 1974 provided further opportunity for Ali's creativity, as he said the fight would be "a killa and a thrilla and chilla when he got the gorilla in Manilla."
Ali won again, but would later say that it was the closest he had every felt to death.
