Seriously, What Are The Knicks Thinking?
What would you do with a man that ran your franchise into the ground and made you the laughing stock of the league, in arguably the most important sports market in the world? What would you do with a man who cost your franchise eleven million dollars in a sexual harassment lawsuit? What would you do with a man who clearly has no idea how to run a team and seems unable to control himself?
A normal person would not only fire that man but we would tell him to stay as far away from the franchise as possible. However, in the case of James Dolan and the New York Knicks they fire the man and then two years later bring him back as a consultant to the team. It’s quite remarkable how the Dolan’s have completely destroyed this franchise and how completely inept they appear to be at running a franchise. Isiah Thomas is back in New York to help them build a playoff team for the first time since the 2003-2004 season, by the way that year they went 39-43. Since that time the Knicks have been an absolute disaster compiling a record of 173-319.
Isiah Thomas took over as President of Basketball Operations in December 2003. In that time he traded young talent and draft picks for oft-injured and overpriced talent. He took the franchise in the biggest media market in the world and he made them completely unwatchable. He seemed to be completely lost at the wheel but he never gave in and always stuck to his “plan.”
Maybe it’s not fair to completely blame Thomas for this whole disaster; the Dolan family continues to bring him back in some capacity so they should share in the blame. However, if the last seven years have taught us anything it’s that Isiah Thomas has no idea how to build an NBA franchise and should be thrown as far away from an NBA front office as possible. The New York Knicks are a disaster right now because of what Isiah Thomas did to that team when he was in charge and now as the Knicks are trying to turn their fortunes around with Amare Stoudemire and Coach Mike D’Antoni they bring back the man who is most directly responsible for their spot in purgatory right now. Congratulations, Knicks fans: Isiah is back.
