NFL: Sam Bradford and Tim Tebow Sign Contracts, So Who Signs Next?

Brian DiTullioJul 31, 2010

Two key camp holdouts were avoided in the NFL late this week as Sam Bradford and Tim Tebow both agreed to contracts.

Bradford, the No. 1 overall pick, reportedly signed with the Rams for $86 million over six years, with $50 million guaranteed, in the wee hours of Saturday morning.

That's an almost absurd amount of money, but the quarterback "premium," along with his No. 1 overall slot, guaranteed his contract would have to be nothing short of staggering.

Tebow signed a five-year, $33 million contract, with $8.75 million guaranteed, on Thursday.

Signing first-round draft picks always has had a certain amount of drama to it, as the players and agents duel with the front office to maximize what, for some, will be their only big money contract.

For the Rams, they need look no further than Oakland and the fresh wound that is JaMarcus Russell to know just how badly missing on a No. 1 overall quarterback pick can screw up a team.

Bradford seems like a safer pick in many ways, and the two have very little in common from a scouting standpoint to make any further comparisons other than their draft position.

Bradford's task is nothing more than resurrecting a Rams team that finished 1-15 last year—a daunting task for anyone.

Moving back to Tebow, his task is to prove Josh McDaniels was right and every critic of his is wrong. While the time frame of just how long Tebow has to prove himself is slightly ambiguous, this is the NFL.

If Tebow isn't the starting quarterback of the Broncos by the end of 2011, the only acceptable reason is because Kyle Orton is playing too well for McDaniels to replace him.

Now, the big contract questions fall to players like Ndamukong Suh, Gerald McCoy, and the other first-round picks.

Detroit has signed Jahvid Best to a five-year deal, but Suh still has not signed as of this writing.

However, now that Bradford has signed, that gives the Lions and Suh a starting point for his contract.

McCoy most likely won't sign until Suh does, which leaves Tampa Bay in a bit of a bind, and wishing they could sit in on the Suh contract negotiations.

The Cleveland Browns still don't have Joe Haden signed with their training camp opening today.

Even if Haden signs today, he most likely misses practice today and, depending on what time a contract is signed, he may not even be able to participate much tomorrow.

The signings will start coming fast and furious over the next few days, and the prolonged holdouts will begin to assert themselves.

But at the end of the day, training camps are open and it's time to play football.
