2011 NFL Draft: Dan Wernery's First Mock Draft

DANIEL WERNERYJul 25, 2010

1.    Cleveland Browns: QB Jake Locker, Washington

Mike Holmgren drafted Colt McCoy in Round 3, but didn’t make much of an effort to ensure he left the draft with McCoy. If Colt McCoy does not appear to be the QB of the future, expect Holmgren to take advantage of this phenomenal draft class.

2.    Buffalo Bills: QB Ryan Mallett, Arkansas #

Colts Jaguars Football

This franchise needs stability up front but will continue to draft skill players instead. Mallett has the best body of a pocket passer in this year’s QB class. The Bills will continue to struggle unless they upgrade at left tackle and quarterback

3.    Tampa Bay Buccaneers:   DE Robert Quinn, North Carolina #

The Buccaneers helped their defensive tackle situation with Gerald McCoy and Brian Price in the 2010 draft. Quinn is physical specimen who could be the most dominant pass rusher in this class.

4.    St Louis Rams:   WR AJ Green, Georgia #

The Rams lack a big time wide receiver for Sam Bradford. Green is a gifted deep threat with outstanding hands.

5.    Jacksonville Jaguars: QB Andrew Luck, Stanford #

If Jacksonville is drafting this high, Jack Del Rio and David Garrard will be out of a job. The Jaguars are an ideal team to draft a quarterback with Maurice Jones-Drew, Mike Sims-Walker and a talented young offensive line.

6.    Detroit Lions: OT Anthony Costonzo, Boston College

Costonzo is a fundamentally sound tackle prospect who engulfs speed rushers. Jason Fox was a nice value for Detroit in round 4, but there is a good chance he isn’t the solution at left tackle.

7.    Denver Broncos:  DE Cameron Heyward, Ohio State

Heyward has the body type to play defensive end in either scheme. The Broncos are still transitioning to the 3-4 defense. Will Josh McDaniels be around for this draft?

8.    Chicago Bears: OT Gabe Garimi, Wisconsin

Jay Cutler may face more pressure than last year in the Mike Martz offense. If the Bears struggle again in 2010 they must leave the 2011 draft with a long term solution at left tackle.

9.    Kansas City Chiefs: WR Julio Jones, Alabama #

Todd Haley and Charlie Weis will spread the field and throw the football in 2010. Right now this offense lacks a go to receiver. Jones has as much upside as any player in college football.

10.  Washington Redskins:  DT Jared Crick, Nebraska #

Crick will miss playing next to Ndamakong Suh in 2011, but don’t expect the production to drop off. Crick is a big body with the skill set to play in both schemes.

11.  Arizona Cardinals: CB Patrick Peterson, LSU #

Peterson heads a talented corner class in the 2011 draft. The Cardinal pass defense has been a liability for years.

12.  NY Giants:   LB Quan Sturdivant, North Carolina

Sturdivant is an athletic linebacker who can also make plays behind the line of scrimmage. The Giants linebacking corps has not been up to par the last two years.

13.  Seattle Seahawks: DE Adrian Clayborn, Iowa

Clayborn can be un-blockable at times. Seattle is looking to replace recently retired Patrick Kearnery at defensive end. Clayborn is a top 10 talent, but his lack of scheme versatility may hurt him on draft day. See Derrick Morgan.

14.  New England Patriots (from Oakland): DT Marcel Dareus, Alabama #

Surprisingly the Patriots passed on Jared Odrick when there was major need at 3-4 DE for this football team. Dareus will receive the spotlight on a young and talented Alabama defense.

15.  Pittsburgh Steelers: OT Matt Reynolds, BYU #

Reynolds is a high character guy who is developing into one the best tackle prospects in this year’s draft. The Steelers lack a true left tackle on their roster.

16.  Philadelphia Eagles: CB Aaron Williams, Texas

Surprisingly the Eagles did not upgrade their secondary on draft day. Williams comes from a program which develops defensive backs better than anyone in college football.

17.  New England Patriots:  OLB Von Miller, Texas A&M

The Pats are getting old on defense and have missed on several draft picks in recent years. Miller is a pass rushing machine who will have experience in this scheme entering the NFL.

18.  Tennessee Titans: LB Greg Jones, Michigan St

Jeff Fisher believes in building his teams from the inside out. Jones is the most polished linebacker in this year’s class. He has the skill set to play all three linebacker positions.

19.  Atlanta Falcons: DE Greg Romeus, Pittsburgh #

Last year the Falcons were disappointed when both Derrick Morgan and Brandon Graham were off the board in round 1. The Falcons need to upgrade their front seven to make a move towards the Super Bowl.

20.  NY Jets:  DT Allen Bailey, Miami

Bailey has the body type and quickness to fit well into a Rex Ryan defense. Must play with more consistency in 2010

21.  Carolina Panthers: TE Kyle Rudolph, Notre Dame#

Rudolph has the potential to be a game breaking tight end at the next level. In a run first offense like Carolina’s, it is critical to have a red zone target at tight end.

22.  Houston Texans: S Rahim Moore, UCLA #

Moore is a center field type safety and has the coverage skills of a corner. Moore led the nation in interceptions in 2009. The Texans still have major holes in their secondary.

23.  Cincinnati Bengals: C Kristofer O’Dowd, USC

The Bengals have two quality bookend tackles in Andrew Whitworth and Andre Smith. The interior offensive line has issues. O’Dowd is athletic enough to play left guard as well.

24.  New Orleans Saints: OLB Akeem Ayers, UCLA #

Ayers has a similar skill set to Sean Weatherspoon. The Saint linebackers lack depth and talent on the outside.

25.  Miami Dolphins: RB Mark Ingram, Alabama #

The Dolphins are a run first offense and the age of Ricky Williams and knees of Ronnie Brown have to be a major concern. Ingram has the football IQ and toughness Bill Parcells craves.

26.  San Diego Chargers: WR Johnathan Baldwin, Pittsburgh #

Baldwin is a huge target at 6-5 220lbs. Vincent Jackson is becoming too much of a head case for General Manager AJ Smith.

27.  Green Bay Packers: CB Ras-I-Dowling, Virginia

The Packer secondary is starting to show its age. In a pass happy NFC, that could be the difference between an early exit and a deep playoff run for the Packers.

28.  San Francisco 49ers: S DeAndre McDaniel, Clemson

McDaniel is a difference maker in the secondary. Last season McDaniel had 8 INT with 182 return yards. McDaniel would be a nice complement to Taylor Mays.

29.  Dallas Cowboys:  OT Clint Boling, Georgia

Boling isn’t physically impressive, but he handles himself well against fast defenses in the SEC. How the Cowboys handle speed rushers will determine their playoff success in 2010.

30.  Indianapolis Colts: OLB Bruce Carter, North Carolina

Carter is an undersized linebacker who is a sideline-to-sideline tackling machine. The Colts always consider scheme first when making personnel decisions.

31.  Baltimore Ravens: WR Michael Floyd, Notre Dame #

Michael Floyd is a big and explosive wide receiver who should thrive in Brian Kelly’s offense in 2010. The Ravens are in a position to go for best player on the board in this position.

32.  Minnesota Vikings: QB Case Keenum, Houston

At some point the Vikings will realize Brett Favre is going to retire. They made a huge mistake by passing on Jimmy Clausen and I don’t expect them to repeat the same mistake this year.
