Tony Romo: Could He Become the NFL's MVP?

Jon HerrmannJul 21, 2010

You may not have noticed, but Tony Romo made huge strides in becoming a top NFL quarterback last season for the Dallas Cowboys.

Romo passed for the most yards of his career, put up the highest passer rating of his career and limited his turnovers to the fewest of his career.

Along with Aaron Rodgers, Romo was one of two quarterbacks with over 4,300 yards to throw fewer than 10 interceptions.  Romo only fumbled the ball four times last season, the lowest total of his career.

While a great number of people will hate to admit it, last season Tony Romo became one of those quarterbacks that any team would want.

Most telling may be that a quarterback famous for faltering late in the season threw only two interceptions in his last six games while putting up 11 touchdowns and at least 250 yards in five of the six (249 yards in the other).

Romo lit up the Eagles in the playoffs before falling to the Vikings in the divisional round.

Now, add Dez Bryant's play-making ability to the mix and Romo may be poised to take the NFL by storm this season.

Assuming he limits his turnovers the way he did last season, Romo could thrive with the additional weapon in Bryant.

He'll have his first full season of Miles Austin as his No. 1, which could open things up for Jason Witten and even result in a break out season from Martellus Bennett.

Romo could be in position to take the Cowboys to places the offense has never seen and, in addition, become the NFL MVP (the first for Dallas since Emmitt Smith in 1993).

Peyton Manning, the leagues MVP from last season, put up more touchdowns than Romo and completed a higher percent of his passes than Romo.  He just edged Romo out in yards, but had lower yards per attempt average than Romo.  Manning also threw seven more interceptions.

The Dallas Cowboys’ star quarterback is in position to jump Manning in almost every statistical category this season, and while that doesn't mean he'll be the league's most valuable player (just ask Drew Brees), it does put him in a good position to make a run at the leagues top individual award.

This season could belong to Tony Romo, maybe even to the Dallas Cowboys.
