7-19-10 Z-Cap: Pelf and Mets Snake Bitten In Arizona
The Mets came into Arizona with a 16-6 record at Chase Field, the best of any visiting team. It seemed like the only Met who had not enjoyed success in Phoenix was Mike Pelfrey, who entered Monday night’s contest 0-4 with a 5.22 ERA for his career against the D-Backs. This outing would not be as bad as his previous performances, it would be worse, in fact the worst of his career as the Mets went on to lose 13-2.
The first inning was all anyone really needed to watch to see that it was going to be a long night for Big Pelf. Pelfrey threw 51 pitches (2nd highest single inning total for a pitcher this season) and gave up 4 runs, aided in large part to a very timid attempt at turning a double play by Jose Reyes. With 1 run already in, Kelly Johnson on 2nd and Justin Upton on 1st, Miguel Montero hit a grounder to Ike Davis that looked like a sure double play. Davis threw to Reyes at second who then made a very lame attempt to avoid a sliding Justin Upton that resulted in an errant throw to a covering Pelfrey at first. Instead of there being 2 outs with Johnson on third, the D-backs scored their second run of the inning on the Reyes throwing error and Montero advanced to second.

Things may have happened differently, but one could certainly look and say that the LaRoche out should have been the third of the inning and New York’s deficit be only 1 run after the first.
That, however, was far from the reality of things. Arizona tallied 4 runs in the 1st and added 2 more in the 2nd, all charged to the Met’s perplexing righty. The simple fact is that for some time now Pelfrey has been unable to finish anyone off. He...TO READ THIS POST AND OTHERS LIKE IT HEAD TO METSZILLA.COM BY CLICKING HERE:
