Yankee Notes: Marte, Robertson, Mitre, Laird, Yogi

Bronx Baseball DailyJul 18, 2010

The big story of the day is AJ Burnett and his stupidity during the Yankees 10-5 loss against the second place Tampa Rays.

Here are some other notes:

  • Damaso Marte has been placed on the DL with inflammation in his left shoulder. LHP Boone Logan was called up to replace him.
  • With Joba Chamberlain struggling, David Robertson may start, getting more important innings as the Yankees 8th inning guy .
  • Sergio Mitre is expected to join the team on Tuesday as he comes off the DL.
  • Yankees prospect Brandon Laird is having a monster season, but as a third baseman he’s blocked behind Alex Rodriguez . So the Yankees have begun the process of having him learn to play as an outfielder .
  • Two former Yankees who couldn’t make it to Old Timers Day: Yogi Berra (who fell) and pitcher Luis Arroyo (who had a mild heart attack).

Joba’s ERA since May 16 is 8.71 so a move out of the 8th inning role seems to be a long time coming.

People have to stop blaming the Yankees for his struggles. They haven’t messed with him at all this season and if anything have given him more slack than he deserves.
