Schlittler and the Yankees escaped the bottom of the first with minimal damage, allowing one run despite a disastrous start that included three errors, stranding two runners at the corners.
The Yankees answered in the bottom of the third when Ben Rice launched a 372-foot solo home run to tie the game at 1-1.
It was a busy fifth inning for the Rays.
With two runners in scoring position, Liam Hicks grounded out to second to bring home Jonathan Aranda. Chandler Simpson followed with an RBI single after another Yankees miscue, giving Tampa Bay a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth and prompting the Yankees to pull Schlittler.
Building on their lead, Richie Palacios ripped a line drive for a two-run double, bringing home Trent Grisham and Simpson to stretch Tampa Bay's lead to 5-1.
Rice capped a big night with his second home run in the top of the eighth, accounting for both of the Yankees' runs. But with one final chance in the ninth and trailing 5-2, New York went down in order to fall to 0-2 in the ALDS.
