NFL Fantasy Football – Rookies to Consider – The QB's

Barking CarnivalJul 7, 2010

I’ll start my annual look at the fantasy football season by looking at rookies to consider drafting at each position. As training camp proceeds, we’ll revisit the rookies and see who is drifting up in value and who is drifting down. As always, I welcome any and all feedback.

As for QB’s, rookies are typically a horrible choice. They throw too many INTs, which can kill you, depending on how your league scores. A good rule of thumb is “never draft ‘em." Some will point to Matt Ryan or Joe Flacco as proof that rookie QB’s can play. Problem is it seems there’s one Matt Ryan for every ten JaMarcus Russells.

Regardless, there are a couple of guys that are going to fall into pretty good situations and may be worthy of a late-round pick in deep leagues if you are daring.

One has to figure Bradford will get every opportunity to start right away with A.J. Feeley on the wrong side of 30. Who knows, though? The offensive line is improving, which ought to help out Bradford if he wins the starting job. The biggest beneficiary to Bradford starting would be Steven Jackson, who figures to return to top form as the centerpiece of this offense.

However, the Rams defense will once again be abysmal. Hence, offensive players aren’t going to be on the field enough to be big scorers. Consider Bradford as a late-round choice in deep leagues if your roster is big enough to carry three guys. Consider this only if he has won the starting job.

There are glaring question marks that need to be addressed if the Panthers are going to become serious contenders in a loaded NFC South Division. First, and most important, who is the starting quarterback?

Matt Moore, who looked pretty good in the final five games of last season, is the popular choice to win the job over the Panthers’ quarterback of the future Jimmy Clausen, who Carolina selected with their first selection (48th overall) in April’s NFL Draft.

Carolina also figures to be a run-first, pass-second type of team with DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart in the backfield. The only way I see Clausen getting on the field is if things go horribly wrong for the Panthers and the season is a lost cause.

Then he would be a rookie QB on a team headed the wrong way – a recipe for disaster. I can't recommend Clausen in any FFL draft, no matter how deep – unless Moore is hurt in training camp and you have a deep roster.

Tim Tebow, DEN

Not just no. Hell no. Hopefully there will be some dumb redneck in your league who takes Tebow in the 3rd round and crows about the steal he’s made. Unless Tebow is moved from QB during training camp, he shouldn't be drafted. Kyle Orton and Brady Quinn will get all the reps once league play starts.

Colt McCoy, CLE

I like McCoy’s chances to play before Tebow’s. Jake Delhomme is on the backside of his career and is now in a much worse offense than Carolina’s. Seneca Wallace gets reps if and when Delhomme is hurt or ineffective – but I have yet to be impressed by Wallace’s skills as a QB. Once again, hopefully some drunk fool at your draft party nabs McCoy in the 5th round and puts him out of your misery. McCoy is a guy to watch as the season progresses, but no way should you consider drafting him.
