For The Record: Noteworthy Dolphins Achievements

J. BrunoJul 1, 2010

I really don't need a reason to love the Miami Dolphins. Win or lose, at the head of the pack, or bringing up the rear- to me they are the greatest football team of all time. It's the way I believe all true fans should feel about their teams.

That being said, there are also quite a few tangible reasons to feel good about the team's rich history, and the achievements of several of its players, both past and present. Here are some Dolphins-related records that you might know, and some you might not.

There are those that may be missing, and others may or may not be shared with other players/teams, but they're all legit to the best of my knowledge.

Individual Records:  First you have to mention Hall of Fame QB Dan Marino, whose single season passing record of 5084 yards has set him apart from generation after generation of Quarterbacks. He also holds about a bazillion little situational records that would likely take too long to list.

In 1999, Olindo Mare set the record for most games in a season with at least 4 FGs, with 5.

Former Head Coach Don Shula is the winningest coach ever, as well as having served as Head Coach in 6 Super Bowls. Also a record.

Current Backup Chad Pennington holds the record for the highest career completion percentage, having connected on 66.1 percent of all the passes he's ever thrown.

Last year, Ricky Williams became the player with the longest period of time in between 1000-yard rushing seasons.

Newly acquired #1 WR Brandon Marshall holds the record for most catches in a single game, having made 21 against the Colts just last year.

Hall of Fame FB Larry Czonka is the only ball carrier in league history to have been called for unnecessary roughness on a would-be tackler.

Recently retired Dolphin and future hall of fame LB Zach Thomas has logged more tackles than any other LB currently in the hall of fame.

Team Records: First mention goes to the most obvious records- The '72 Dolphins of course, being the only team in the history of the sport to go undefeated and become Superbowl Champions. The Fins returned to the SB and won the following year, being one of only seven teams ever to win back to back Super Bowls.

It may also interest fans who were unaware, that the franchise enjoys the top all-time win percentage of any NFL team, having emerged victoriously from 57.9%  (387-281-4) of its games played since the club's founding in 1966. This is the ammunition I like use most often when arguing my 'greatest team ever' point.

Some other less impressive, yet also significant records include:

Most Consecutive Home Games Won, 27.

Most Two-Point Conversions in a Season, 6

Most Field Goals by Both Teams in a Game, 9
Miami Dolphins (6) vs New England Patriots (3) on 10/17/99

Most Passing Yards by Both Teams in a Game, 884
New York Jets (449) vs Miami Dolphins (435) on 9/21/86

Most Seasons Leading League in Fewest Sacks Allowed, 10, in '73,'82-'90

Fewest Sacks Allowed in a Season, 7 , in 1988.

Most First Downs, Game, 39
New York Jets vs Miami Dolphins on 11/27/88

Fewest Turnovers in a Season, 13, in 2008

Largest Year-over-year Improvement, 10 games 2007(1-15)-2008(11-5)

Feel free to leave adds in the comment section, I'm sure there are other records that may have been overlooked. Fins Up!
