Every Race Should Be Like The All-Star Race

Melissa Bauer-HerzogMay 26, 2010

I admit that the all star race is my favorite race of the year.  But it’s not my favorite because of the segments or the racing to get in if you didn’t automatically qualify for the big race.  It’s my favorite because it’s the only race of the year where owners tell drivers to only bring back the steering wheel.

Every race should have an unofficial motto as cool as “wreckers or checkers.”

I know that race cars are expensive to buy and build so owners don’t want them beat up so much that they can’t be driven again.  But I feel it has affected the quality of racing for the win.

No longer do we see the days of Earnhardt where cars were pushed out of the way if they wouldn’t move.  We now see little taps asking the other driver “I’m here, can you let me pass?”

During the all star race, we see drivers forcing their way into holes and telling drivers “you need to get out of the way!” instead of asking them nicely.  It is touted as the most exciting non-points race of the season but I think it is the most exciting race of the season, period.

Even my friends, who can’t be even remotely considered NASCAR fans, love the grittiness of the all star race.  They love to see the guys race as hard as they can and not worry about hurting the car.

If the drivers drove more like they did in the all star race in others, NASCAR would gain more fans and more of a reputation than just "a bunch of people that drive in circles all day."  Forget about saving cars; focus on bringing more fans to the sport and making NASCAR even bigger than it already is.

NASCAR could rival baseball or even football if drivers were more concerned about going for the win and attracting fans than saving the car for the next race.

Return NASCAR to the aggressive do-anything-to-win days of the Allisons, Earnhardt, and Petty, and others and show potential fans that it’s more exciting than just driving five hundred miles around a one mile track.
