Injury News And Notes

Adam BernacchioMay 18, 2010

I touched on Nick Johnson’s injury in an earlier post, but yesterday there was a plethora of injury news around the major leagues. Let’s talk a look the players who were coming and going yesterday.

Rollins is back in the Phillies' lineup

Jimmy Rollins, Philadelphia Phillies. As if the Phillies’ offense needed anymore help. The Phillies activated Rollins from the 15-day DL yesterday.

Though it’s just a small sample size, Rollins was hitting .391 in 23 AB’s before his calf injury. Rollins had a pretty terrible year last year hitting just .250 with a .296 OBP. I doubt he puts up those numbers this year.

Travis Snider, Toronto Blue Jays. The Blue Jays placed OF Travis Snider on the 15-day DL with a sprained right wrist. Snider got off to a really slow start this year hitting just .155 in April, but really has turned it on in May.

In 12 games in May, Snider was hitting .378 with three home runs and an 1.115 OPS. He is expected to return in a couple of weeks.

Mark DeRosa, San Francisco Giants. This one has been brewing for a while. DeRosa was placed on the 15-day DL because of left wrist soreness. The move is retroactive to May 9th.

DeRosa, who signed a two-year, $12 million contract with the Giants in the offseason has gotten off to a sluggish start in 2010. He was hitting .194 with one home run before suffering his injury.

J.P. Howell, Tampa Bay Rays. Howell, who hasn’t pitched all year, suffered a serious setback yesterday. It’s never a good sign when your manager says this:

“J.P. did not have a good day,” said Joe Maddon. “We’re going to have to re-evaluate it. I don’t know what the next step is right yet but did not feel good following his throwing today. He threw some pitches that looked kind of normal to me, and then all of a sudden he just did not want to throw anymore. I asked him if he felt pain and he had a hard time describing that to me, and I did not want to press him on it. … I don’t know what it is, I just know that it didn’t feel good.”

I think it is a safe bet that we won’t be seeing Howell for a while.
