Fantasy Baseball Spring Storylines: Mar. 11 (Davis, Napoli & More)

Eric StashinMar 12, 2010

Spring games continues to rage on.  Some players are stepping up to claim jobs while others seem to be letting them slip through their fingers.  Let’s take a look at some of the stories from today’s games:

  1. Wade Davis’ grasp on the fifth starter spot is anything but locked.  He allowed 5 runs on 3 hits and 3 walks, striking out 2, over 2 innings to leave him with a 14.73 ERA this spring.
  2. Chris Davis went 4-for-4 with 1 HR, 3 RBI and 2 R.  That’s the type of performance fantasy owners want to see from him.  Now, the question is, can he do it more than just once?
  3. Mike Napoli went 2-for-4 with 1 HR, 1 RBI and 1 R, putting him at .385 with 3 HR and 3 RBI this spring.  Of course, this is the Angels we’re talking about, meaning Jeff Mathis will see plenty of playing time no matter what Napoli does.
  4. Of all the closers in Major League Baseball, does anyone have a looser grip on their job then Leo Nunez?  After allowing 5 runs (3 earned) on 4 hits and 1 walk, striking out 1, over 0.2 innings, he’s sporting a spring ERA of 10.13.  He’s nothing more than a last resort option on draft/auction day.
  5. Shaun Marcum again didn’t give up a run, tossing 3 shutout innings allowing 1 hit and 0 walks, striking out 2.  For the spring he’s allowed 1 hit and 1 walk, striking out 4, over 5 shutout innings.  He definitely is worth monitoring as a sleeper option in deeper formats.
  6. Think that there’s no chance Reid Brignac earns an everyday job for Tampa Bay?  With Matt Joyce and Gabe Kapler battling for playing time in RF, there’s every chance that Ben Zobrist ultimately fills that role, opening up time.  Brignac has taken every opportunity given to him.  After going 2-3 with 3 RBI and 1 R, he’s hitting .500 with 13 RBI this spring.  He’s definitely one to monitor at this point.
  7. Jake Fox saw time behind home plate...Interesting, no?
