With goal scoring down in the NHL from past seasons. I was thinking to myself who was the best goal scorer of all time?

The list of good goal scorers is long! you can trace the first dominate scorer back to the early days of the NHL! Joe Malone had perhaps the best season ever with 44 goals in 20 games in 1917-1918! Then there is Muarice Richard " the Rocket " the first player to score 50 goals in one season. He set the standard by scoring 50 in 50 games.

Gordie Howe scored 801 goals in his Hall of Fame career a record since broken. The " Golden Jet " Bobby Hull was the first player to score more than 50 in one season. His son Brett scored 86 goals in 90-91 one of the finest goal scoring efforts in NHL history!

I present the four players I think are the best goal scorers ever! I'll leave the voting up to you.

 1. Phil Esposito= Esposito was perhaps the first prolific goal scorer in NHL history! In 1282 games with the Blackhawks, Bruins, and Rangers Esposito scored 717 goals good for fifth most in history. He also had 873 assists for 1590 points. His goals per game average is 12th alltime with 0.56! In 70-71 he scored a then NHL record 76 goals with 76 assists for 152 points.

 2. Mike Bossy= Bossy only played ten seasons in the NHL but his impact was immediate as he set the record for goals by a rookie ( since broken ) with 53 in 77-78.  For the next decade he was one of the most feared goal scorers in the NHL! Bossy scored at least 60 goals in a season no less than five times. Scoring 50 in every season except his last. Retiring after the 86-87 season Bossy ranks 19th with 573 goals. But he ranks first in goals per game with 0.76!

 3. Mario Lemieux= During his 17 year career Lemieux may have been the most complete player to ever lace up the skates. After battling Hodgkins disease Lemieux returned to play for several more seasons retiring after the 05-06 season ranked 9th in goals with 690. 3rd in goals per game at 0.75 7th in points with 1723! In 1988-89 Lemieux had is finest season scoring 85 goals with 114 assists for 199 points.

 4. Wayne Gretzky= " The Great One " What else can be said about him he emerged already a household name in Canada. Gretzky holds almost every single season and career scoring record there is. Single season goals 92 in 81-82 Assists with 163 in 85-86. Points scored with 215 in 85-86. After dominating for two decades Gretzky retired after the 98-99 season ranked first in goals 894, assists 1963, and points with 2857. These are records that may never be broken.

These four players are the best goal scorers to ever play in the NHL! Hopefully we will see players like Sidney Crosby, or Alex Ovechkin set themselves apart and someday maybe even join this list of great goal scorers. Leave me a comment I'd like to hear who you think is the best goal scorer!
