NCAA Tournament 2022: The All-Tournament Team Ahead of the Sweet 16

Mar 23, 2022

During the opening weekend of the NCAA tournament, teams tend to attract the headlines. Players may receive a quick mention at the time, but most attention is devoted to the dozens of games that create a chaotic March Madness slate.

The middle of the week is a perfect chance to reset, though. After all, the players shape the actual story.

Entering the Sweet 16, B/R has assembled its first edition of the All-Tournament squad. Team results are considered, but the primary factors are total production and overall impact. The selections are not limited by position, either.

The next update will be following the Eight Eight.

Second Team

1 of 6

Marcus Carr, Texas

Although the Longhorns exited March Madness in the second round, Marcus Carr nearly propelled them to the second weekend. He tallied 15 points and nine assists to lift Texas over popular upset pick Virginia Tech, then he notched 23 points and seven assists against Purdue. Carr committed only three turnovers in Texas' two games.

Benn Mathurin, Arizona

When the 'Cats needed him most, Benn Mathurin delivered. The second-team AP All-American scored 30 points, burying the game-tying three to force overtime in the second-round clash with TCU. He also provided eight rebounds, four assists and two steals to help Arizona avoid an early exit. That massive day followed an 18-point showing in the opening round against Wright State.

Kyler Edwards, Houston

Houston has advanced to the Sweet 16 on the strength of its defense, but Kyler Edwards has excelled on the offensive end. After registering 25 points, six rebounds and three assists opposite UAB, he posted 15, six and four, respectively, against Illinois. Edwards has knocked down 10 of his 20 three-point attempts.

Jaden Ivey, Purdue

Jaden Ivey opened the NCAA tournament with a 22-point outing, allowing the Boilermakers quickly dispatch Yale. The coveted NBA prospect then drained a clutch three-pointer to thwart Texas' comeback hopes, ending the second-round game with 18 points and three assists. So far, Ivey is 5-of-10 from the perimeter and 15-of-18 at the free-throw line.

Mark Williams, Duke

Star teammate Paolo Banchero is the biggest name, but Mark Williams has enjoyed a sensational start to the tourney. First, he racked up 15 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five blocks opposite Cal State Fullerton. Williams then recorded 15 points, eight rebounds and five blocks to help Duke survive Michigan State and give soon-to-retire coach Mike Krzyzewski his 1,200th career win.

First Team: Charlie Moore, Miami

2 of 6

Playing at his fourth school in six seasons, Charlie Moore is the engine of the Hurricanes' run to the Sweet 16.

In the opener against USC, Moore collected 16 points, four assists and four steals. He connected on two free throws with three seconds remaining in regulation to hand Miami a 68-66 victory.

Moore spearheaded the takedown of No. 2 Auburn, flirting with a triple-double in the upset. Along with 15 points, he snared nine rebounds and dished eight assists. For good measure, he nabbed three steals as the 'Canes hammered Auburn 79-61.

Largely thanks to Moore, Miami can secure the program's first-ever trip to the Elite Eight with a victory over Iowa State.

First Team: Brady Manek, North Carolina

3 of 6

To be clear, the whole "ejected because he elbowed Jeremy Sochan in the face" situation isn't a great look.

Brady Manek's numbers are still fantastic, though.

North Carolina routed Marquette in the opening round, leaning on Manek's 28 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Before his flagrant foul against Baylor, he'd scorched the top-seeded Bears for 26 points, five rebounds and two assists.

Entering the Sweet 16 versus UCLA, he's drilled 9-of-18 threes and has 54 total points compared to only two turnovers.

First Team: Drew Timme, Gonzaga

4 of 6

Gonzaga wouldn't be here without Drew Timme.

Georgia State put a scare into 2021's national runner-up, staying within two at halftime and even briefly holding a lead with 13 minutes remaining in the game. During the second half, though, Timme poured in 22 of his 32 points to boost the Zags. He also corralled 13 rebounds and dished two assists.

Second-round opponent Memphis took a 10-point lead into halftime before Timme took control again.

After the break, the All-American forward netted 21 of his team-leading 25 points. He added 14 rebounds and four assists to carry Gonzaga past Memphis 82-78 and into a clash with Arkansas.

First Team: Hunter Dickinson, Michigan

5 of 6

Last season, Hunter Dickinson guided top-seeded Michigan to the Elite Eight. He might be repeating the feat in 2022, only the Wolverines are more of a surprise as a No. 11 seed.

The sophomore center began March Madness with 21 points, six rebounds and four blocks against Colorado State. Dickinson finished 8-of-10 from the floor and 5-of-5 at the free-throw line during the 75-63 win, setting up a showdown with No. 3 Tennessee.

Once again, he could hardly be stopped. Dickinson netted 27 points, hitting eight of his 13 shots with an 8-of-10 mark at the charity stripe. He tallied 11 rebounds and four assists in the 76-68 win.

As a result, Michigan is playing in the Sweet 16 for the fifth consecutive NCAA tournament.

First Team: Christian Koloko, Arizona

6 of 6

We love a good exclamation point.

As the 'Cats avoided a crushing loss to TCU, Christian Koloko capped the overtime triumph with a putback dunk. It pushed Arizona to an 85-80 lead as the clock ticked below 10 seconds remaining and wrapped up his magnificent second-round performance.

Koloko registered 28 points on 12-of-13 shooting, also notching 12 rebounds, three blocksincluding a key swat to prevent a larger deficit late in regulationand two assists.

In the earlier matchup with No. 16 Wright State, he amassed 17 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and five blocks.

Next up for Mathurin, Koloko and Arizona is a showdown with fifth-seeded Houston in the Sweet 16.
