No. 9 Oklahoma vs. No. 12 Texas Postponed Because of Inclement Weather

Tim DanielsFeb 17, 2021

No. 9 Oklahoma announced Wednesday its scheduled home game against No. 12 Texas on Thursday has been postponed because of inclement weather.

The Big 12 will attempt to reschedule the contest before the end of the regular season. The conference  postseason tournament is slated to begin March 10.

It's one of several sporting events at both the pro and collegiate levels that have been postponed after a rare winter storm impacted the southern central United States.

More than three million people in Texas remain without power with below-freezing temperatures still forecasted for the affected areas, per CNN.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas said the company's controlled power outages prevented a total blackout in the state. A timetable for full restoration remains uncertain.

"I think from the perspective of the grid collapsing, I think what has happened here is a response that kept the grid from collapsing, that kept us from going into a blackout condition," ERCOT CEO Bill Magness told CNN. "Now the difficulties that this has imposed on the citizens of Texas, everybody in the state, have been enormous."

Around 20,000 people in Oklahoma were also without power because of a controlled outage following the winter storm, but their service has since been restored.

The Sooners and Longhorns previously played Jan. 26 at Texas' Frank Erwin Center. OU held off a second-half rally by UT to pick up an impressive 80-79 road win.

Oklahoma (13-5, 8-4) is second in the Big 12 standings behind No. 2 Baylor (17-0, 9-0). Texas (13-5, 7-4) is fourth heading into the final weeks of the regular season.

For now, both teams remain scheduled to play Saturday. The Sooners will travel to face Iowa State, while Texas is expected to host West Virginia.
