No. 6 Michigan Upset by Unranked Penn St. as Lamar Stevens Drops 26 Points

Paul KasabianFeb 12, 2019

Lamar Stevens had 26 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks as Penn State shocked No. 6 Michigan 75-69 on Tuesday at the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday.

The Nittany Lions entered the game with a Big Ten-worst 1-11 conference record, while Michigan was alone atop the conference standings at 11-2.

PSU led for the final 36 minutes and even took a 16-point lead in the second half. Michigan cut the deficit down to four points in the final minute but could not come closer.

Wolverines head coach John Beilein was ejected at halftime after accruing two technicals for arguing with an official:

Myles Dread scored 17 for PSU. Charles Matthews led Michigan with 24 points. Penn State dominated Michigan on the glass, 35-25.

Although the Nittany Lions are just 2-11 in conference play, the upset may not be a complete shock in retrospect. PSU played well in its three games leading into the Michigan matchup, with a victory over Northwestern, an overtime loss to No. 12 Purdue and a four-point road defeat at Ohio State.

Still, the Wolverines were seven-point favorites, per Vegas Insider. They were also ranked second in adjusted defensive efficiency, per the Pomeroy College Basketball Ratings. It's not uncommon for highly favored teams to fall on the road in conference play, but it's not every day a last-place team takes down the league leader.

Both teams play next on Saturday. Michigan will look to rebound at home against No. 24 Maryland. Penn State will visit Purdue.
